Revelation Chapter 12

12:1-6: The Mystical woman and The Mystical Dragon.

“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.”(Rev.12:1-6).

Verse one deals with the identity of this woman. It is not difficult to find out who she is insofar as scripture is interpreted by scripture. In Genesis 37:9-11, Joseph dreamed a dream in which the sun, the moon and the eleven stars did obeisance to him. He told this dream to his father and his brethren: “and his father rebuked him, and said unto him what is this dream that you dreamed, shall I and your mother and your brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?” In Hebrew and Middle Eastern mythology generally, the sun is the symbol of the man(male, father) and the moon the symbol of the woman(female, mother) and the stars are their male offspring(sons). Here the patriarch and matriarch and the sons of Israel are represented. There is no confusion about the identity of this woman, she is Israel. The twelve stars are the twelve tribes of Israel. Some interpreters have tried to identify this woman as the Church. That interpretation does not fit the description as we shall see in verse three. Joseph’s dream was fulfilled: he was sold into slavery in Egypt out of envy, by his brethren. He became prime minister of Egypt; and there was famine in the whole Middle East. His brethren came to purchase food in Egypt. Egypt had food because Joseph had used his God given wisdom and ingenuity to preserve and store food in the days of plenty. They bowed themselves to him to the Earth in fulfilment of the dream. Subsequently his whole family came to live with him in Egypt and became slaves in exile in the land of Egypt. The divine rescue of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt and forging them into a nation and a peculiar people of God is the story of the Old Testament.

There are some who teach that Europe and North America are the lost ten tribes, that the church there have replaced Israel. This is false. The ten tribes were not lost in Europe and America but in Asia. Since the establishment of the State of Israel, the exiles have being making Aliya to Israel. Recently, members of the lost tribe of Menashe were brought to Israel from India.

In verse two, we find this mystical woman pregnant with a child. She was in labour pains and cried out to be delivered. The revelator here takes us back in time to the Palestine in the Roman period. Israel as a nation was in travail. They were ruled by Imperial Rome through a puppet King, Herod the great. Herod was not a Jew by birth. He was proselyte to Judaism. His father Antipater was an Idumean who originally came from Philistine, but converted to Judaism when the Jews conquered Idumea during the reign of the Hasmonean king John Hyrcanus(135 BC). Herod was an oppressive ruler. The nation of Israel as a whole, at that time, were crying out to God for deliverance from foreign domination. They hated to pay tax to a foreign power. The site of the Roman soldier in his oppressive military gear was a constant reminder of domination by Imperial Rome. No nation welcomes foreign domination, let alone an oppressive one, and Israel was no exception. They were expecting their Messiah to come and free them from oppressive Roman domination. The expectation of a conquering Messiah(Messiah Ben David) instead of a suffering Messiah(Messiah ben Joseph) was partly responsible for the failure of the Jewish leadership and the larger majority of the people to recognize Jesus as their expected Messiah. There were series of revolts by Jews which were routlessly and savagely quelled by the Roman legions stationed in the land. There were also self-proclaimed messiahs purported to deliver the Jews from Roman domination, like Theudas and Judas of Galilee(Acts 5: 37-38). Details of these revolts are beyond the scope of this comment. Interested students are advised to consult Josephus, The Wars of the Jew.

The land of Israel was at that time referred to as Palestine by Imperial Rome. This was a Roman version of Philistine which the Jews refer to as Philistim i.e., sea peoples. The Philistines, a Hamitic people came from Caphtor(Gen.10: 14), probably a reference to ancient Crete. There are historians who trace them to ancient Anatolia. Whatever their origin, they were not Semitic and in no way synonymous with the Palestinians or Israeli Arabs of today. They settled the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea after a failed invasion of Egypt, prior to the exodus of the Israelites out of Egypt, and built the five Philistine cities: Gaza, Ekron, Gath, Ashdod and Ashkelon. The Israelites fought very many bitter wars with the Philistines who were uncircumcised and idol worshippers. It was in denigration of the Jews that the Romans referred the whole area as Palestine. The attempt to remove the vestiges of Jewish residence in the land of Israel is not new. Considering the socio-political settings at that time, this mystical woman, Israel was really in the pains of labour about to be delivered of her most important and illustrious Son, our Lord Jesus the Christ.

In verse three, we see another wonder in the heavens, a great red Dragon. This mystical figure is no other person than Satan, the current ruler of the world and the god of this age, the prince of this world, the prince of the power of the air(2 Cor. 4:4; Eph.2:2; Jon.14:30). He is indeed as described here a great red Dragon. I have done some battles with him. He is the supreme opposer of Israel and The church of Jesus The Christ. He has seven heads. The seven heads are the seven Beast Empires that have oppressed Israel throughout history.

These seven Beast Empires are: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medopersia, Greece, Rome and Nazi Germany. The seven crowns are the seven responsible rulers of these empires who have persecuted Israel. And there are ten horns. Horns symbolize power. The ten horns are ten rulers of the Eighth And Final Beast Empire Of Satan. This Eighth And Final Beast Empire is yet to be constituted. But the scripture is clear as to its composition. We shall delve into more details about this empire in our comments on the book of Revelation and a special look on it in our study of eschatology. The ruler of the Eighth Beast Empire, is one of the Seven rulers of the Seven Beasts Empires, who comes back to life to rule over the Eighth And Final Beast Empire. Hence the Seven heads of the Dragon instead of eighth heads. The Eighth head as it were, is one of the seven heads revived. It is indeed the revived seventh head.

Satan is a spirit being but not in the class of man or God; a former archangel named Lucifer, who through deceit usurped the authority that God gave Adam, the first man as his representative in the earthly realm of His Universal Kingdom. He does not have a physical body, so like God he cannot administer the Earth directly. He does so by proxy. He rules through his minions, human agents. To function in this physical world, a spirit being must possess a physical body, which acts as a transducer to enable it function in the external physical environment. We function here simply because we a have a physical body. When our earthly house of this physical body is dissolved, though we have a glorified eternal immortal but physical resurrection body in the afterlife, we can no longer function in this physical world. This is what is commonly referred to as death. Death is not the cessation of existence. It is a change of sphere.

Neither God, The Father, nor The Holy Spirit can rule directly here on Earth. They do so by proxy: in other words, they indwell people whom they empower to act on their behalf. Satan and his demonic hordes function in a similar manner. That is why Satan and his demons possess humans and animals as well as inanimate objects. Apart from the physical impossibility of Satan ruling here directly, he is a copycat and delights in mimicking God in every way possible. Remember when Satan revolted against God, he said: I will be like the Most High…., (Isaiah 14:14). Jesus can rule on the Earth directly because he has a physical body which enables Him to function in the external physical environment. But let me say here that His resurrection body is essentially different from our present mortal body, in that it is immortal, does not contain any blood, though consisting of flesh and bones, has the ability to materialize and dematerialize. We shall acquire this kind of glorified immortal body, unlimited, limitless and illimitable by external physical modalities like water, fire, walls, distance, etc. It shall possess some qualities of the spirit like ability to go through wall, fire, water, and ability to ascend and descend, upward and lateral and circular motions in space and immortality. No one can kill the spirit. It is eternal. Even God cannot destroy the spirit: He can only imprison it in Hell and the lake of fire. That is what is referred to as the second death, the first being physical death which is the separation of the material(Basar) from the immaterial parts(nephesh: spirit and soul) of man. This is the dual or dichotomous view of man which is the OT paradigm. The NT paradigm is trichotonous. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”(1 Thess.5:23).

Let me say here that God and his angels have the ability to take up forms that are comparable to the human body and be visible to the optical eye of man for a limited period of time. Satan and his fallen angels have this ability too. Remember that Satan has not been totally divested of his powers as an archangel of God, the anointed cherub that covereth. Therefore he makes perverse use of these powers. Also demons have powers to incarnate(Gen. 6:1-4). Not everyone we see in this world is a human being. There are angels of God on assignment and there are humanized demons and demonized humans. These things fall into the subjects of angelology and demonology. The activities of familiar spirits are diverse, we shall not concern ourselves with them here.

In verse 4, we are taken back in time to the origin of the cosmic conflict when Lucifer rebelled against God and succeeded in seducing one-third of the angels of God to side with him in his rebellion against God. This is an enormous number of angels, considering the fact that God has an innumerable number of angels. “We have come unto Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, an into an innumerable company of angels”(Heb.12:22). It may well be that Daddy created more angels after the satanic rebellion inasmuch as one-third of infinity is infinity. Remember that this was before the creation of man. Following the rebellion, Satan and his hordes of fallen angels were cast out of the third heaven, or more precisely the heaven of heavens, which is the abode of God and His angels into the dark void. Contrary to what many teach, Satan’s abode at the moment is not in the pit of Hell but in the Dark Void. Satan dreads and abhors Hell, and is doing everything in his power to delay his being cast into Hell though inevitable.

The execution of the divine sentence on Satan and his angels is in four stages. First, they were cast of the Heaven of heavens into the dark void and starry heavens. Second, precisely in the middle of the 70th seven of Daniel, they shall be cast down to the Earth by archangel Michael and the angels of under his command(Rev.12:9). Thirdly, at the End Of The Ages, at Armageddon, he, Satan shall be cast into the bottomless pit which is also referred as the abyss. His angels shall be cast into Hell(Rev.20:2). At the end of the battle of Armageddon, the antiChrist and the false prophet, the first and second beast respectively shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. Fourthly, at the end of the millennium, Satan and his fallen evil angels and Hell itself shall be cast into the lake of fire where the The Beast and The false prophet would been cast into a thousand years previously(Rev.20:10).

The dragon, Satan stood before this pregnant woman, Israel, gravid with a son. Satan was ready to devour this child as soon as He was born. How did he do this? We have established the fact that Satan rules the world by proxy. When Jesus The Messiah of The Jews and all mankind was born, His star appeared in the heavens. When the wise men from the East saw it, they came to worship Him. When they came to Jerusalem, they went to Herod the king to enquire: “where He was to be born, King of The Jews; for we have seen His star in the east, are come to worship Him?” When Herod had ascertained from Jewish scholars of biblical prophecy, he said to them: in Bethlehem of Judea. Go and worship Him, and when you are done, bring me word that I too may go and worship. He said this with tongue in his cheek; he was fearful of the loss of his throne, and wanted to kill Him. The star led them to where The Child was. They worshipped Him, and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, they did not go back to Herod, but returned another way to their own country, having been instructed to do so by God. When Herod saw the magi had outwitted him, and rat it on him, he was enraged, and sent his soldiers to kill all male children in Bethlehem and its environs who were two years old and under(Matt.2:1-18). It could be that Rachel was one of the women who lost her children to the massacre by Herod’s soldiers inasmuch as it is a common name in Israel at that time, but it was more likely the mystical Mother, Israel; “Rachel weeping for her children, she refused to consoled because they were no more”(Jere. 1:15,Matt.2:18). That is how Satan operates, using men under his control. But we see that God had warned Joseph in a dream to escape to Egypt with The child and His mother and to remain there until the death of Herod.

In verse 5, the male child was born who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron(Psalm 2:9). He was caught up to heaven. Jesus finished His earthly ministry. He was crucified on the cross, he died and was buried. He descended into Hell, he led captivity captive and received gifts for men. He rose from the dead on the third day: for it was not possible for Him to be holden by the pangs of death(Acts 2: 24). Today, He is seated at the right hand of God, angels and authorities being made subject to Him(1 Pet. 3: 22). In a few sentences, Apostle John, the revelator described the first advent of Christ. If Satan had succeeded in snuffing out the life of the infant Jesus in the manger, could He had become the Saviour of all mankind? Certainly not: hence the need for God to preserve him until the time appointed of The Father for Him to atone for the Sin of all mankind on the Cross of Calvary. The birth, ministry, death, resurrection, ascension and session of Jesus at the right hand of the throne of The Majesty in the heavens conclusively brought to an end the first Advent. We eagerly await the Second Advent.

Verse 5 ends with the resurrection and ascension and session of Jesus at the right hand of the Throne of The Father in The Heavens. Verse 6 transports us to the middle of the 70th Seven of Daniel, i.e., three and one-half years into the so called Tribulation Period. In chronological order, verse 7 precedes verse 6, because before Satan persecutes the Woman, he must have been cast down to Earth from his abode in the Dark void and starry heavens, the second heavens as it were, the first being the atmospheric heavens. The woman flees into the wilderness because The Great Tribulation has begun: it is the time of Jacob’s trouble(Jere.30:7). This wilderness is prepared of God to protect the woman from the Wrath of Satan which is kindled by his being thrust out of the heavens into the Earth. Many believers, biblical scholars and charismatic nuts alike believe this to be the red rose city of Petra, in modern Jordan. In Old Testament times it was called Sela. In NT times it was called Pella. I heard some charismatic nuts have hidden Bibles in cans in Petra hoping that some Jews fleeing from the great persecution by the antiChrist might find them to read during the Great Tribulation. This place of refuge for the woman is prepared to sustain her for a limited time of 42 months or three and one-half years. Biblical scholars are agreed that this period covers the second half of the 70th seven of Daniel rather the first half during which Israel is protected from assault until the antiChrist breaks his covenant in the midst of the 70th seven of Daniel’s 70 sevens prophecy(Dan.9:27). The prophet Isaiah refers to this covenant as “the covenant with death.” It is contracted with the antiChrist who is a messenger of death. The many from within Israel who support this covenant have no knowledge of its falsity. Therefore it shall be terror for them to understand it, when the antiChrist breaks it precisely in the midst of the week(Is.28:15-18).

Rev.12:7-12: The cosmic conflict: Michael defeats Satan and he is cast down to the Earth.

“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.”(Rev.12:7-12).

As I pointed out in verse 6, in chronological order verse 7 precedes verse 6, for before the woman flees, she’s being pursued by the Dragon. And this is borne out by verse 13 which states that when the dragon saw that he was cast down to Earth, he persecuted the woman who brought forth the man child. As I appointed out earlier, the execution of God’s sentence against Satan and his fallen angels is in stages. In eternity past, when he rebelled against God prior to the creation of man, he was cast of the Heaven of heavens into the Dark Void and the Starry Heavens. Here, in the midst of the 70th seven, there is war in the heaven, archangel Michael and the angels of God under his command fought against Satan and his fallen evil angels. In this war in the heavenlies Satan was not passive: the dragon fought and his angels, but prevailed not. In other words, he was defeated. What do you expect ? Michael is God’s angel of war. In the dispute about the body of Moses, Michael defeated Satan by saying: “The Lord rebuke thee,” and he prevailed. Am persuaded he must have used the same tactics. This is a war of words. And in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Everything else is temporary, only the Word is eternal. The Word was before everything else, and when every other thing else is not, The Word abides. The word of God is a sword, the sword of the spirit. Jesus is the word of God. Therefore, He is the sword of God. No wonder therefore, in Rev.19, at the battle of Armageddon He appeared with a two edged sword in His mouth.

There are eighteen events that would occur precisely in the middle of the 70th Seven. We cannot enumerate them here without doing violence to the text. To help our understanding of this verse, let me point out a few of them. When Satan is defeated in the cosmic conflict by the archangel Michael, he is cast down to the Earth. He has Great Wrath, because he knows that he has but a short time, precisely three and one-half years and perhaps a few days before he is cast into the bottomless pit. As a spirit being without a physical body, he is invisible and rules by proxy. He possesses the antiChrist, like he possessed Judas, the man from Iscara, before he betrayed his master Jesus with a kiss(Jon.13:27). As soon as Satan possesses the antiChrist, he violates the covenant with the many from within Israel, invades the land of Israel and relocates his headquarters to the rebuilt Jewish Temple on The Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The invasion of Israel by the Beast-antiChrist has been dubbed The Jerusalem Campaign by Robert van Kampen of blessed memory, and I subscribe to that. Our Lord Jesus prophesied: “when you see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh…….”(Luke21:20-24). “He shall plant the tabernacle of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end and none shall help him.”(Daniel 11:44). He sets up a statute of himself in the Holy of Holies of The Third Temple to be worshipped. He demands worship of all mankind, both Jews and Gentiles. This is the abomination that maketh desolate spoken by Daniel the prophet. The abomination of desolation is the antiMessiah himself and his image in the Holy of Holies of the temple. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus The Christ said: “when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet stand in the Temple, let him that is Judea flee to the mountain”(Matt.24:15-22). This verse also supports the fact that the woman is Israel: “he that is Judea, let him flee to the mountains.” Who flees to the mountains? He who is in Judea. And who is in Judea? Israel, the woman. Robert van Kampen believes the Woman is synonymous with the 144,000, 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel, who were sealed in Rev.7. But am not dogmatic about that.

The antiChrist is a dead man who had ruled one of the 7 previous Beast Empires come back to life. It does appear his identity shall be hidden until the midst of the week when he makes his debut at the Third Temple. In other words, he shall travel incognito until unveiled at the midpoint of the 70th week of Daniel. At the midpoint of 70th week, the veil shall be removed. This man had a fatal wound with a sword and his fatal wound was healed. That the wound was fatal meant that the man died. That the fatal wound was healed meant that he came back to life. A dead man come back to life, who is able to make war with him? And every man takes to his heels(Rev.13:3).

Verse 10-11: The Devil is the accuser of brethren. Though cast out of the heaven of heavens, he still has access to the heavenly court to accuse believers. Now cast down to Earth from the dark void, he loses that right of access to the court of heaven to accuse the brethren. Therefore there is joy in heaven, hence the loud voice in heaven saying: “now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of God.” Because the accuser of the brethren is removed, barred access into the court of Heaven, the believers have enhanced status in the court of heaven. The effect of this heavenly scene, the eviction of Satan from the Dark Void and being barred access to the court of Heaven is evident on Earth where the the cosmic conflict has shifted. The believers overcome him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and they are ready to die for what they believe. This enhanced status does not add anything new to our salvation. We are “saved by grace, through faith”, and we are “the righteousness of God in Christ”, but an enablement to function better. And the effect is evident in the believers willingness to die for what they believe.

In verse 12, the dual effect of the withdrawal of access to the court of heaven from Satan is felt in the joy of the dwellers of heaven. On the other hand for the living earth-dwellers, the consequence is woe, for the wrath of Satan is kindled inasmuch as he knows that he has but a short time before he is cast into Hell which he dreads.

Verse13-17: The cosmic conflict shifts to Earth.

“And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”(Rev.12:13-17).

Here we must distinguish the wrath of Satan from the wrath of God. Satan’s wrath is against humanity in general but more against those who fail to capitulate to his authority. I do not really know why, but I think because man was created to take his place and render praise and worship to God. Satan does not love anyone. Those who cooperate with him will face the wrath of God which is worse. He knows that. Those who do not cooperate with him he will kill. His strategy is destroy or disqualify. The great tribulation is the wrath of Satan. There will be unbelievers who will not cooperate with Satan’s minion, the antiChrist for ideological reasons. These people will face the wrath of Satan not because there are believers but because they are nonconformists.

As I pointed out earlier, the woman fleeing into the wilderness is subsequent to the Dragon being cast out of heaven and down to Earth, and exhibiting wrath against the woman who then flees. The Dragon’s wrath against the woman is primarily because she brought forth the man child. In verse 14, the woman is greatly helped of God who not only loans her the wings of great eagle to flee into her place, but also provided her nourishment for the period of her living incommunicado. The two wings of great eagle is a metaphor indicating the swiftness with which the woman flees. Much of her survival depends on the swiftness with which she flees. As soon as Jerusalem is surrounded by the forces of the antiChrist in the Jerusalem campaign in which he relocates his headquarters to Jerusalem, Israel have very little time to escape. Hence the need for divine assistance. This escape would be nothing short of the miraculous. If not for the finger of God, how would Israel survive the wrathful onslaught of Satan, the Dragon? The period of her living incommunicado is time, times, and half time which is three and one-half years, 42 months or 1,260 days which is the length of the second half of the 70th seven of Daniel’s. During this period, the woman is kept away from the presence of the serpent, that is Satan. God provides nourishment for the woman during this period of living in hiding in Petra for three and one-half years.

In verse 15, “the Serpent cast water out of his mouth as a flood, that he may cause her to be carried away of the flood.” In verse 16, “the Earth helped the woman, and opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the Dragon cast out of his mouth.” Some biblical scholars believe this to be a literal flood which Satan brought about to swallow up the woman who is fleeing from the serpent. That may well be true, but I beg to differ. My thought here is that flood signifies a large army which the antiMessiah mobilized to catch up with the fleeing Jews just as Pharaoh did to the Israelites after the exodus from Egypt. The land of Israel is prone to earthquakes. It is probable that this large army is swallowed up by earthquake. Quite frankly, I don’t think it matters much what the flood is so long as Israel is protected from the machinations of the serpent. In verse 17, the Dragon sees his effort to get at the woman is fruitless, he turns his wrath on the remnant of her offspring who keep the commandment of God(observant Jews), and have the testimony of Jesus Christ(believers in Jesus the Christ) who did not escape into the wilderness. The killing of Jews and Christians in the land of Israel during the Great Tribulation will be outrageous. As we pointed out earlier, Satan loves no one, and his wrath is against all humanity. But we see here that he has a particular dislike for Jews and Christians, the two groups of people who remind him of utter failure to defeat the Almighty. Antisemitism and the killing of Christians all of the world are nothing new, but during the Great Tribulation, they know no bounds.

Revelation chapter 11

Verse 1-14: The ministry of the two witnesses.

“And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.”(Rev.11:1-14).

Verse 1 is an earthly scene, and the key to the whole of this chapter. Therefore we shall deal with it a bit extensively and in depth. The revelator is given a reed, a kind of a measuring rod used in the Ancient Near East, about 10ft or 3m long. He is instructed by the supervising angel to measure the temple, the altar and those who worship therein. Right now there is no temple, but certainly before the middle of the 70th seven, there will be one. May be the Beast-antiChrist will permit the Jews to rebuild their temple after the seven year peace treaty between six Arab and Islamic nations and Israel brokered by the antiChrist is signed and ratified. The Jews have already made preparations for the rebuilding of temple. There is also an altar. If there is an altar, there must also be priests who minister at the altar. The Temple Mount Institute in Jerusalem have trained priests, carefully chosen from the house of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi through DNA tests, ready to start ministering at any moment the temple and the altar are ready. The vessels of the ministry have also been prepared. The Sanhedrin has been reconstituted and a Cohen Gadol appointed. The “Para Aduma”(the Red Heifer) has also been found.

These things send jitters to the Arab and Islamic world who frequently accuse Jews of attempting to blow up the al Alqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock in order to rebuild their temple.

How are we sure the Jewish temple must be rebuilt? Primarily because the Scriptures say so, as we have seen here and, secondarily because history supports it. Historically, each period of the kingdom of Israel had a temple. The first kingdom had a temple built by Solomon. This temple was destroyed by the forces of Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon in 586 BC. The second kingdom established after the return of the exiles from Babylon beginning in 538 BC, following the proclamation of liberty for the Jews by Cyrus The Great, King of Persia, after his forces overran Babylon: had its temple built by the returning exiles. It was finished about 515 BC. It was extensively and lavishly refurbished by Herod the Great, a puppet of Rome. This temple was destroyed by the Roman general Titus in 70 AD, following the Jewish rebellion that began in 66 AD. Because of this concurrence of a particular kingdom period with a temple, the kingdom periods are also referred to as temple periods or simply temples. Therefore there are first and the second temple periods or temples. Each period lasts for years before a temple is built. The third temple period or third temple has already begun since 15th May, 1948 when Israel was declared independent. During the Yom kippur war when Israel was nearly swallowed by its Arab neighbors, the then defence minister of Israel, Moshe Dayan said: “The third Temple is over”. At that time, as at now, there is no temple. He was referring to the third kingdom period which began in 1948 and will end at end of the 70th seven of Daniel’s 70 weeks which corresponds with the death of the two witnesses.

We know certainly there would be a Jewish temple standing on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem at the middle of the 70th seven of Daniel’s prophecy of 70 sevens. How that will come about is the exclusive preserve of the Almighty God of Israel. We may speculate about it, but can never be cocksure how it would happen, until it happens. There are also worshippers. Therefore Jews and Judaism will remain until we enter the last 7 seven years of this age, no matter how hard their enemies try, and how ingenious they become in devising means by which they hope to exterminate the Jews and liquidate Israel. They said, come, let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance(Psalm 83:4). Jews as a peoples group will never be wiped out. That would only be possible if men can change the ordinances of the sun, moon and stars(Jere.33:23-26). And again, I make a full end of other nations where I have driven thee, but I will not make a full end of thee(Jere.30:11). Rather Abba shall punish their enemies for their efforts to exterminate them(Jere.2:3), and the nations for dividing His land which He gave to the descendants of Abraham through Jacob by a covenant of salt(Joel 3:2). “Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord.”(Jere.2:3). The God of Israel has served notice to the nations not to meddle with His people and the land He gave them, but they will not hearken.

In verse two, John the revelator is instructed by the angel not to measure the outer court: for it is given to the Gentiles. In old testament times, the gentile proselytes to Judaism had access to the outer court, but they were barred from the inner court or the sanctuary. The priests ministered in the Holy Place. The Holy of Holies is forbidden to everyone else but the High Priest; and that once a year, when he approaches with the blood of the sacrifice on the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, first for himself, and then for the errors of the people. So, as at other periods of the kingdom, the Gentiles shall have access to the outer court of the third Temple.

“And the Holy City shall they thread under foot forty and two months.” Biblical scholars are agreed that this period corresponds to the second half of the seven years of the 70th week of Daniel alotted to the Beast-antiChrist. During this period, the antiChrist invades Israel in what biblical scholars call the Jerusalem campaign, relocates his headquarters to Jerusalem, takes over the Temple and the city, which he thoroughly desicrates by importing a statue of himself into the Holy of Holies of the rebuilt Jewish temple on Mount Moriah, The Temple Mount in Jerusalem, and demands worship of all mortals, both Jews and Gentiles(2 Thess.2:4). This is not unlike Antiochus Epiphanes who imported a statue of the Olympian Zeus and the Canaanite Baal Shemen, in the image of his burst into the temple, who serves as a prefigure of the Beast-antiChrist. At this time Jews and Gentiles, more so believers who do not take the Mark of The Beast-antiChrist shall be barred from the city under the pain of death. It shall be like in the days of Emperor Hadrian, after He defeated the Jews in the Bar Kochba Revolt(132-136 AD). Jerusalem was ploughed with yokes of oxen, rebuilt and renamed Aelia Capitolina. Jews were barred entry into the city under the penalty of death. For forty and two months, the Gentiles shall have full control of the rebuilt Jewish temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. If the Gentiles have control of the city of Jerusalem, they certainly have control of the temple.

“But the court which is without the temple, leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the Holy City shall they three under foot forty and two months.”

The studies of Asher Kaufman has shown that the location of the Holy Of Holies of the Jewish temple on Mount Moriah is neither within the Dome of the Rock or al Aqsah mosque, but a few meters away at the Dome of The Tablets. The implication is that the Jews can rebuild their temple without tampering with both Islamic mosques in the vicinity of the temple Mount. Perhaps this is what is meant by the statement: “the court which is without the Tempe leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the Holy City shall they tread under foot forty and two months.” The Jews may not regain the outer court. And a full temple may not be rebuilt, but a tabernacle-like structure that can be easily assembled. But the Jews have made preparations for the rebuilding of the temple. Architectural drawings have been made of the temple based on the plan in Ezekiel 40-43. Every necessary material has been procured. More than $100 million have been raised. What is needed now is the permission to build or the political will of the leaders of Israel.

Verse 3: “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.”

During this period, God Almighty annoits His two witnesses with extraordinary power to bear Him witness. There is a consensus of opinion amongst biblical scholars that the period of the ministry of the two witnesses corresponds to the 1,260 days or 42 months or three and one half years of the second half of the 70th seven. During this period when the antiChrist persecutes Jews, Christians and anyone else who fails to capitulate to his authority, the two witnesses shall bear witness to The God of Heaven that no one should worship the beast or his image or take the number of his name; nor be involved in the humanistic religion of the antichrist, but worship only the God of heaven. Apart from spitting fire on those who attempt to harm them, the ministry of the two witnesses is encapsulated in the three angelic announcements of Rev.14.

“And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”(Rev.14:6-12).

“These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.”

Verse 4 calls them the two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the whole Earth. What does this mean? The olive tree is the source of olive oil which has various uses and symbolism in the Mideast. The candlestick is the source of light which also has various uses and symbolism also. But suffice it to say that these men are powerfully annoited and are a source of light in a world almost covered by darkness. No one else has the bravado to challenge and poke his fingers into the face of the antiChrist as these two would do, without being executed instanta. Their ministry is right there in Jerusalem, perhaps on The Temple Mount, right under the noses of the Beast-antiChrist and the false prophet and their soldiers and security agents. They are divinely protected, perhaps, with an army of invisible angels about them(Ps.125:1,2).

“They that trust in the LORD Shall be as mount Zion, Which cannot be removed, But abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, So the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.”)Psalm 125:1-2 KJV).

May be God Almighty would be there with them, in person, on Mount Zion(Heb.12:22-24).

but ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

Hebrews 12:22-24 KJV).

Who are these two witnesses. Some say they are Moses and Enoch, and others, Moses and Elijah. One of my fathers in eschatology, Robert van Kampen of blessed memory believed very strongly they are Moses and Elijah brought back to the Earth, which he taught in his book, “The Sign” – which I believe to be the most biblically accurate and comprehensive work so far in the field of eschatology- and he portrayed them so in the novelization of his glorious work, “The Fourth Reich.” The wonderful thing about these three biblical characters and personalities is they never died like other men. Enoch was translated, and he was not found, God took him(Gen.5:22). The Great Apostle Paul, our beloved brother wrote: “by faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation, he had this testimony, that he pleased God”(Heb.11:5). Enoch was spared the agony of death. By faith he was translated, because his life and testimonial were pleasing to God.

Of all Old Testament characters and personalities, none is honored, revered, and venerated like Moses. Amongst the rabbis it is said, from Moses to Moses- Moshe Ben Maimon(Maimonides)- there is none like Moses. Moses actually died physically. No one is arguing about that. The Bible made it clear that God buried him(Deut.34:5,6). If he had not died, he would not have been buried. If he had not died, the archangel Michael could not have fought Satan over his body(Jude 1:9). My view is that God buried him in a secret location in order that his body shall not be venerated and become a source of idolatry to Jews in particular and the world in general. Why was Satan interested in his dead body? Obviously he had some use of it, and that would not have been glorious. Elijah was taken by a whirlwind into heaven(2 Chr.2:11). Elijah could not have gone into heaven in his physical body: for flesh and blood doth not inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption(1 Cor.15:50). Besides, no man has gone into heaven except the Son Of Man who came down from heaven; and no man had seen God at any time but the Son who is in the blossom of the Father He has declared Him(Jon.18,32). That was the situation before Jesus rose from the dead. Today, the resurrected OT saints and the NT saints who slept in the Lord are in Heaven.

Of these three personalities, the ministries of the two witnesses match those of Elijah and Moses. However, I personally do not believe they are Moses and Elijah come back to life, for the following reasons:

(1) “It is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgement”(Heb.9:27).

(2) “Flesh and blood shall not inherit the kingdom of God of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption”(1 Cor.15:50).

It is obvious that these men could not have gone to heaven in their earthly mortal bodies, awaiting to be brought back to the Earth to bear witness to God in the last days. Had they received glorified eternal immortal resurrection bodies when they were taken to heaven, the antiChrist will not be able to kill them at the expiry of their ministry. Or were their disembodied spirits and souls taken to heaven and reintroduced to the Earth in the last days in new mortal bodies? We can begin to see the insurmountable problem this assumption would present. God’s word does not support reincarnation of the saints.

(3) Jesus said: “no man has ascended to heaven, but the son of man who is from heaven”(John 3:13). The implication of this statement, taken at its face value, is that up until the time of Jesus, The Messiah, no man had ascended into heaven. When Jesus rose from the dead, the bodies of departed Old Testament saints arose from their graves and appeared unto many in the city(Matt. 27:51-53). Where were these men before this time? Bible scholars like Tim LeHaye believe and teach that paradise was formerly a part of the underworld of the dead where the Old Testament righteous were kept. And I concur. This part of the underworld of the dead called Paradise or more appropriately its occupants were taken to heaven at the resurrection of Jesus, The Messaiah. No physical body could survive in these two locations, Heaven and the underworld of the dead. Now would God give these two men resurrection bodies? If so the antichrist would not be able to kill them: for resurrection bodies are immortal. Would He give them new mortal bodies? That would contradict His Word: for it is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgement. And that would support reincarnation. And that cannot be allowed to stand. My submission therefore is that these men are ordinary men like you and I who believe in God, and who will be given the anointing and spirit of these men, perhaps a double measure and portion, to do a work similar to and above theirs in the last days. And this is borne out by the fact the Jesus called John the Baptist Elijah, not in the sense that he was Elijah come back to life, but that he was anointed with the power and spirit of Elijah(Matt.17:10-13).

There is a consensus of opinion amongst biblical scholars that John the Baptizer was not Elijah come back to life, though he was the herald of His coming. Before Christ’s first advent, God sent a herald, a man anointed with the anointing and spirit of Elijah: an Elijah but not Elijah in person. This person was John The baptist. Jesus said that Elijah had already come and they did to him whatever they liked. By that the disciples understood Him to mean John the Baptist(Matt.17:10-13). We know, and we have conclusively and unequivocally proven that John the Baptist was not Elijah come back to life. In the same vein, before His second advent, God shall send another herald, not John the Baptist, not Elijah come back to life, but an ordinary believer annoited with the spirit and power of Elijah. This usage is similar to what we see in literature today. If the works of modern writer parallels that of Shakespeare, or George Elliot, we say he is a Shakespeare or a George Elliot. He is neither Shakespeare nor George Elliot come back to life. He is no more Shakespeare nor George Elliot than he is a monkey’s uncle or cousin.

The Characteristics of the ministry of the Two Witnesses.

Verses 5 & 6: “And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.”

In these two verses the characteristics of the ministry of the two witnesses are revealed. Again these characteristics match those of the ministries of Moses and Elijah to a large extent: but there are differences. They are as follows:

(1) Fire:

If any intends to hurt these men, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies. This is the manner of death that befalls those who attempt to harm these men. There would not be just a few of these cases, with the location of their ministry right there in Jerusalem, right under the noses of the two beasts, the antiChrist and the False Prophet and their armies and security agents. When God called Moses, it was by fire. The Lord appeared to him in the burning bush(Ex.3:2). He was baptized with fire. His ministry began with the ten plagues in Egypt, and one of the components of the 7th plague was fire from heaven(Ex. 9:24). When the tabernacle was reared up in the wilderness fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice. Under the ministry of Moses, the children of Israel were led by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar fire by night throughout their wondering in the wilderness( Ex. 40:34-37). At Taberah, when the people of Israel complained, the fire consumed those in the uttermost parts of the camp(Num.11:3).

Elijah’s ministry was also characterized by fire. In the contest with the prophets of Baal, by the words of Elijah, fire came down from heaven and consume the sacrifice(1 Kin.18:38). When Ahaziah King of Israel sent the captains of fifties with their fifties, by the words of Elijah fire came down from heaven and consumed the two captains of fifties with their fifties(2 kin.1:9-12). When Elijah was taken by whirlwind into heaven, there were chariots of fire(2 Kin.2:11).

(2) Drought:

The two witnesses have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the of their prophecy. This phenomenon was evident in the ministry of Elijah. , “Elijah was a man subject to like passion as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit”(Jam.5:17,18; cp. 1Kin.17:1).

The children of Israel experienced drought in the wilderness. God asked Moses to speak to the rock. Frustrated by the murmuring of the children of Israel, “shall we give you water out of the rock, you rebels,” he struck the rock twice instead. That was an offense to God, an act of insubordination and disobedience for which he was barred entry into the promised land. They drank of the rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.

(3) Turning Water into Blood:

This miracle was evident in the ministry of Moses(Ex.4:9; 7:20).

(4) Plagues:

Moses commanded the ten plagues on the land of Egypt(Ex.7-11).

(5) Elemental Control:

Both Moses and Elijah controlled the elements as we have seen.

(6) The Span of their ministry:

This is where they differ from both Moses and Elijah. Both Moses and Elijah have longer span of ministries. Moses ministered for 40 years and Elijah probably for a shorter period under the reign of Ahab, King of Israel. The span of the ministry allotted to the two witness is 1,260 days or 42 months or three and one-half years which corresponds with the second half of the 70th Seven Of Daniel, and the time allotted to the antiChrist to reign(Rev.13:5).

(7) Death:

Moses died and was buried by God Himself. No one knows the whereabouts of his grave to this day. Elijah was taken by a whirlwind into heaven. Like Enoch he was spared the pain and agony of death. He was translated.

Verse 7-10: The Death of the Two Witnesses.

“And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.”

Before the expiry of the allotted time of the two witnesses, no one can hurt them. This clearly shows that everything concerning the servant of God is in His hands. Everything works according to His plans and purpose. When their ministry is over, they are fare game for the antiChrist, the Beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, who makes war against them, overcomes and kills them(v.7). They are killed on the last day of the 70th week or early on the first day of the 30-day reclamation period; the extra 30 days that leads to the 1,290 days spoken of by Daniel the prophet(Dan.12:11). We are not told the way and manner in which they shall be killed. They probably will not be among those who were beheaded for there their witness(Rev.20:4). Verse 8 tells us that their corpses shall lie in the street of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the great city, spiritually referred to, at this time, as at the time Christ, as Sodom and Egypt, because of the blatant idolatry, license, immoralities and debauchery practised by its inhabitants at that time, the majority of whom are Gentiles, with the tacit approval of the antiMessiah, the Emperor Of The Eighth Beast Empire who makes Jerusalem the international capital of His Empire, and converts the Third Temple And Temple Mount to his residence and tactical headquarters. In verse 9, the living wicked earth-dwellers of all races and colours will accede to the public display of their corpses for an indefinite period for all to see. They will not permit them to be buried. This will serve the ego of the Beast who would want all to know how powerful he is, and again to show that he is in control. In the past one would have wondered how the world would view their bodies all at the same time. Today it is no longer a wonder for modern technology has made it practically possible.

In verse 10, the living wicked earth-dwellers rejoice and make merry and exchange gifts in celebration of the demise of the two witnesses whom they see as God’s agents of terror. A good part of their ministry shall lie within the day of the Lord, the period of God’s Wrath which begins with the breaking of the 7th seal(Rev.8:1). Their ministry will end with the expiry of the sixth trumpet which also marks the end of the 70th week.

Verse 11-14: The Resurrection of the Two Witnesses.

“And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.”

Verse 11 tells us that three and one-half days after, the two witnesses are killed, precisely on the fourth day into the 30-day Reclamation Period, the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet. Great fear fell upon the men in the vicinity of Jerusalem who saw them. Verse 12: “A voice was heard from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended into heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them.” God interrupts the public display and desecration of their corpses by the antiChrist and his minions which most probably would have gone longer had God not intervened. What a great way of honoring these marvelous servants of God. God exalted these two great servants of His in the presence of their enemies. Besides this visible and open resurrection from the dead and ascension into heaven of the two witnesses, God honors them further by wreaking harvoc on their enemies. At that same hour, there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of seven thousand. As result, these living wicked earth-dwellers were frightened and glorified the God of heaven. This kind of worship to God is unacceptable because it is rendered out of fear not reverential awe. In verse 14, the second woe occurs. This follows the 6th trumpet which occurs shortly before the end of the the 70th seven but before the 7th trumpet which occurs a few days into the 30-day Reclamation Period of the kingdom.

Verse 15-18:The Seventh Trumpet: God Almighty Reclaims His Rule Over The Earth.

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.”(Rev.11:15-18).

Verse 15: This is a heavenly scene. The trumpet is blown by the seventh angel; “and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become(the kingdoms) of God and of His Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” The power of the Beast-antiChrist to act is over, having been paralyzed at the breaking of the 6th seal judgement, his allotted time of 42 months or three and one-half years is complete at the end of the 70th week. The allotted time of three and one-half years of the two witnesses is over, and their ministry of the same span is complete. They have been killed on last day of the 70th week or the first day of the 30-day Reclamation Period of the kingdom. Three and one-half days later, precisely on the 4th day of the 30-day reclamation period, they were resurrected to life and taken to Heaven by The Spirit of God. Most probably on the 5th or 6th day of the 30-day reclamation period, the 7th trumpet is blown by the seventh angel. This is interesting because it is full of political intrigues. As we have said, this is a heavenly scene but has ripples both in heavens and on Earth.

God gave Adam authority to rule the Earth as his heavenly representive in the earthly realm of His universal kingdom for six days or better still, six millennia. The 7th day or better still, the 7th millennium would be the Shabbat of the Lord. In other words Daddy would take over his kingdom at the expiry of the 6th millennium. But Adam sold out to the devil. Satan became the god of the age. The transaction was legal and binding because Adam had the legal right to do that, but he did not have the moral right. The usurpation by Satan of the authority granted Adam by God Almighty shall expire as the expiration of God’s lease to Adam. This is what happens here. As soon as the 7th trumpet is blown, there were voices in heaven, the voices of men and of angels, saying: “The kingdoms of this World are become of God and of His Christ….” In the previous quotation of this verse I deliberately put the second kingdoms of in brackets. In the second quotation, I deliberately omitted it altogether. This is because it does not exist in the original Greek. This is why it rendered in italics in the KJV. In the World ruled by the devil, there are kingdoms, but God has only one kingdom. The Earth is one realm of that kingdom. When God Almighty reclaims His rule over the Earth, the kingdoms of this World or better still this Age will become the Kingdom of our God and His Christ.

This is like the formation of a government in exile to fight and take over a nation whose people have been defeated, scattered and taken over by a foreign power. Once the government in exile is formed, the foreign power knows it has a big problem because the enemy can now better co-ordinate itself. Once this happens, the citizens of the oppressed nation will rejoice, but there will be confusion, anger and recklessness by the foreign government. When the government in exile gains a foothold in its own land and reestablishes itself in it, the foreign oppressor becomes jittery and takes reckless action, but there is joy amongst the citizens of the oppressed nation. This is exactly what happens here as we shall see in the following verses. These kingdoms shall be in place when God Almighty reclaims His rule of the Earth. This is exactly what the Scriptures say in the book of Daniel: “And in the days of these kings shall God Almighty set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and the Kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever…..”(Dan. 2:44,45).

The Reaction in Heaven.

In verses 16 & 17, the 24 elders who sat upon their seats in God’s Throne Room in heaven, fell upon their faces and worshipped God, “saying We give thee thanks, oh Lord God Almighty, who art, and was, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.” The reference to Lord God Almighty here is to Jesus, the second person of the Godhead, because he is the one who is, and was, and is to come. God the Father will never rule the Earth directly, because He is a spirit being and possesses no physical body. He will always administer the Earth through an earthly representative, an Adam.

“The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from the Heavens.”(1 Cor.15:47).

When The Father regains His rule over the Earth, He hands it over to His earthly representative, an Adam, The Second Man, the son of man from the heavens. Or even more appropriately, The Second Man reclaims rule over the Earth in the behalf of God. Therefore Jesus must be here on Earth, on Mount Zion to reclaim God’s rule over the Earth.

The Reaction on Earth.

In verse 18, the nations react angrily: “because thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou should give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, small and great; and shoulder destroy those who destroy the earth.” Here on Earth, at that time, besides the Eighth And final Beast Empire consisting of ten nation confederation, there will be other nations and kings like the kings of the north, east and south. These other kings are not allies of the Beast-antiChrist. As a matter of fact, they oppose him at the end of time(Dan.11:40-45). But when God Almighty regains His rule of the Earth, they become very angry against God. They put away their differences and unite to fight against God. This is a marriage of convenience in order to defeat what they perceived to be a common enemy. They do not want God to retake physical possession of the Earth through His representative. They know that would spell doom for them, because God would judge them for corrupting the Earth, and would reward His servants, the prophets and the saints.

To continue with our analogy, when the oppressed nation defeats its oppressor and regains its freedom and independence, the government shall punish the citizens of the oppressor and its collaborators amongst its own citizens, but shall reward its own citizens who had fought gallantly against the oppressor. This is exactly what happens here. When God Almighty regains His rule over the Earth, Jesus returns to Heaven, the prophets and the saints are rewarded at Bema Seat judgement, and the marriage of the Lamb to His bride, the raptured saints are held in Heaven. Here on Earth, the Beast-antiChrist, and the nations, though battered and paralyzed by the sixth seal, the trumpet and the bowl judgments are allowed of God to gather their forces for the final showdown on Earth, 25 days later, at the battle of Armageddon.

“And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.”

In verse 19, the temple of God was opened in Heaven, and there was seen in His temple the Ark of His testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. The temple of God was opened in Heaven and the Ark of His covenant with Israel was displayed. This has ripple effects on Earth where there are lightnings and thunderings, voices and earthquake and great hail. This is like the display of power by a superpower, in a military parade, which is about to go to war to defeat its enemies. Here, God Almighty serves notice to the nations of the Earth that He is about to wipe them out at Armageddon and take over physical possession of the Earth. In ancient Israel, when the nation is right with God, the appearance of the Ark of the God of Israel in battle meant utter defeat and annihilation of the enemies of Israel. The display of the Ark of God in the heavenly Temple spells doom and utter defeat to the kings and kingdoms of the Earth.

Millennial Views

The English word millennium comes from the Latin words mille and annum. Mille  means thousand while annum means year. Therefore millennium means one thousand years. The word is used only in the Scroll of Revelation in the entire Bible. The Greek equivalent is used six times in chapter 20 of  the Scroll of Revelation. An angle came down from heaven and laid hold on the Dragon, that old serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years(Rev.20:2). And the angel imprisoned Satan till the thousand years were fulfilled(Rev.20:3). It is written: and I saw thrones, and they sat that upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for  the word of God, and which had not worshipped the Beast, neither his image, neither received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years(Rev.20:4). Speaking of the resurrection of the dead, John the revelator wrote, the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished( Rev.20-5). Those who participate in the first resurrection shall reign with Christ a thousand years. And when the thousand years were fulfilled, Satan shall be loosed out of prison(Rev.20:6,7). As we can see here, six times in six verses in Rev.20, the phrase thousand years is mentioned in connection with the reign of Christ. Whilst the Scroll of Revelation is the only place in the whole of the Scriptures where the the duration of the reign of Christ is mentioned, the concept of the reign of Christ is evident in the whole of the Scriptures. It is evident that a glorious and golden age will be ushered in at the expiry of the sixth millennium.

And it shall come to pass in those days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many shall go and say, come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of His ways, and we shall walk in His paths; for out Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And He shall judge smong the nations, and shall rebuke many peoples; and they beat their swords in plowshares, and their spares into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more(Isa.2:2-4).

The concept of the millennium originates in creation itself: for God created the whole earth in six days. He rested on the seventh day and hallowed it(Gen.2:3). Each of those seven days represent a millennium. After creation God leased the Earth to Adam. And God blessed Adam, and God said unto them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the Earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the foul of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the Earth(Gen.1:28). Adam became God’s representative on Earth. Adam became as it were the god of this Age.  Note, Adam was never the god of this world(cosmos), but he was the god of this age( aeion). In Judaism, there is the concept of this age(olam haba), and the age to come olam haze. The lease to Adam will last till the expiry of the present age which occurs at the end of the sixth millennium. At the end of the sixth day or millennium, the rulership of Earth will revert back to God who is the  true owner of the Earth. Adam never had the title deed of the Earth. God is the possessor of the Earth. Blessed be Abram of the Most High God, possessor of the heavens and the Earth(Gen.14:19,22). The title deed of the Earth is in the Throne Room of the temple in heaven. It is the seven-sealed scroll of Revelation 5,6,10.

Because God is a spirit being without a physical body, He cannot rule the World directly because He had no physical body with which to relate with the external physical environment. The physical body is a transducer that enables a spirit being to relate with the external physical environment. Adam too is a spirit being, but he had a physical body. Therefore he can relate with the external physical environment. But the present physical body has limitations. One of such limitations is that it confines the bearers to a particulate location. And God cannot be confined to a particulate location. Therefore God rules  the world by proxy. Satan too is a spirit being without a physical body. So he too rules the world by proxy. For a spirit being to function in this physical world, it must possess a physical object. Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit(2 Pet.1:21). The Greek translated move is entheos. It means God inside. The prophets and writers of the WORD OF GOD were possessed of God. In other words, God was inside them, directing them from within. Satan and his fallen evil angels do the same with those they possess. Some madmen are possessed by evil spirits. There are also some supposedly normal human beings that are possessed by evil spirits. By their works ye shall know them. Adam’s lease would last for six days or six millennia. A day is like a thousand years in the eyes of God when it is past, and vice versa(2 Pet.3:8). Adam lost the lease to Satan when he and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Adam sold out Satan; it was legal transaction and therefore binding. Adam had the legal right to do that but not the moral right. Right now Satan has the tenure of the lease to Adam, but not the title deed of the Earth. Satan’s rule over the Earth will end at the expiration of Adam’s lease which is the end of the sixth millennium.

God created the Earth in six days. On the seventh day He rested from all His works. God rested the seventh that and He sanctified and hallowed it. Therefore the seventh day is the Lord’s Shabbat. At the expiry of the sixth day or sixth millennium, at the end of the present age, the ruleship of the Earth will revert back to the Amighty God. But neither God the Father nor the Holy Spirit can rule the Earth directly because neither of the two possess a physical body. God the Son, the second person of the Godhead has a physical body having previously incarnated, died and was buried, and is risen from the dead with a new eternal immortal physical resurrection body. The first man is of the Earth, earthy: but the second man is the Lord from the heavens(1 Cor.15:47). The Lord Jesus the Christ, the second man, the last Adam,  will be God the Father’s point man here on Earth in the millennium. He will be God’s representative here on Earth, in the earthly realm  of His universal kingdom in the millennium. The prophets are equivocal in proclaiming the rulership of the Christ over the earthly realm of God’s universal kingdom in the millennium. And I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the some of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought Him near before Him. And there was given Him a dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, and that all people , and nations, and languages should serve Him; His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed(Dan.7:13,14). And the prophet Zechariah wrote: And the Lord shall be king over all the Earth; and in that day, there shall be one LORD, and His name one(Zechariah.14:9). The prophet Isaiah wrote: for unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince Of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace, there shall be no end , upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for every. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this(Is a.9:6,7). At the Council of Jerusalem, James, the half brother of the Lord Jesus the Christ affirms the establishment of the millennial kingdom. Someon hath delared how God first did visit the nations, to take out from them a people for His name. And to this agree the words of the proohets, as it is written: After this I will return, and I will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again it’s ruins, and I will set it up; that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, who doeth all these things(Acts 15:14-17). There is a similarity between the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall perform this, and the Lord who doeth these things.  Besides the above quoted Scriptures, there are myriads of others that speak about the coming of this kingdom(cp. Isa.4; 11; 32; 34; 52:1-12; 61:2b-11; 66:10-21; Amos 9:11,12; Zech. 12:8,9; 14:16; Matt.16:28; 26:29; Jon.18:36; 2Pet.1:11).

Millennial Views arose as a result of how biblical scholars view the coming of the Lord in relation to the millennium. Broadly there are two views, millennialism and amillennialism.  In the Greek language, the letter a  added to a word as preface, negates the meaning of that word. Therefore amillennialism literally means no millennium. Amillenialism is the view that there will be no literal millennium. Amillenialists posit that Christ reigns now in the hearts of those who believe in Him between the first and the second advent. Millennialism is the view that there will be a literal one thousand years reign of the Christ. Whereas amillennialism is one and only one view, millennialism has two different facets.  Premilleninialists are those who not only believe in a literal one thousand year reign of the Christ, but believe and teach that the millennium is only realisable after the coming of the Christ. In other words that Christ Himself shall usher in the millennium. Postmillennialism teaches that the Christ will come after the spread of the gospel has ushered in the kingdom. Amillennialism preaches a spiritual kingdom. We must remember that falsehood is sometimes truth stretched beyond its elastic limit. It is true that Christ reigns now in the hearts of those who believe in Him. This the mystery form of the kingdom. In the eschatological timeline, the prophetic gap which is called the Church Age, the gentile interlude, or the timiless period,  between the 69th and the 70th seven of Daniel’s 70 seven prophecy is also called the mysterion. It is aptly so called because it is the mystery form of the kingdom of God. Had the Jews accepted Jesus as their Messiah, the kingdom would have been established immediately. On their rejection of the Messiah, the kingdom was postponed, and a mystery form established. In the mysterion, there are no physical earthy borders, Christ reigns in the heart of His disciples irrespective of ethnicity, whether they are Jews or gentiles, and whatever their earthly nationalities. But this is only half the truth, because there is a literal physical earthly kingdom over which the Christ will reign. As a matter of fact,  a literal physical earthy kingdom is not possible with the coming of the Messiah. The first man is of the Earth earthy, the second man is the Lord from the heaven. Besides, the millennium is the Shabbat of the LORD. God must rule the Earth through His mediatorial representative, the Son of Man. Only Jesus bears this appellation. It has a direct relevance to His rulership of the Earth. The title deed of the Earth belongs only to God. He is the creator and possesor of the heavens and the Earth. In Revelation chapter 5, the Son of God, who prior to this time has been sitting at the right hand of the Father, The Majesty in the Heavens, stands as the slain  Lamb of God, accepts the seven sealed scroll from the Father, which is the title deed of the Earth, because He is about to revisit the Earth, to reclaim His rule and physical possession of the Earth. So, amillennialism is a half truth and therefore a false and wrong view of the kingdom.

Amillennialism was developed by Saint Augustine(354-425 A.D.) in the fourth century. He was strongly influenced by Ambrose of Milan, a church leader who argued that the Jewish people were irrevocably perverse and not worthy of any good thought. He made use of Origen’s allegorical method of interpretation to formulate the system of millennial view we call amillnnialism. Augustine’s book, The city of God, still influences the Church today. He also wrote Tract Against The Jews in which he argued that Jewish people should be treated unmercifully because they have no value and are  undeserving of any consideration. Initially Augustine was convinced that the literal one-thousand years kingdom which the Bible spoke about would occur between the first and second advent of Christ. Over time, he became disillusioned because the description of the kingdom in the Bible did not match the reality of the world in which he lived. Therefore he decided that the kingdom could not be literal, but a spiritual kingdom, if it were to occur between the first and the second advent of Christ. The kingdom of God, he declared, was in the hearts of faithful men, not in an actual literal kingdom on Earth over which Christ would reign. The allegorical method of interpretation resulted in the spiritualization of everything in the Bible. Israel was no longer Israel; Jerusalem was no longer Jerusalem; and one thousand years was no longer one thousand years, and so. Who had the authority to determine what they were; every interpreter was at liberty to give his own spiritual meaning to anything in the Bible. The Bible became a subjective patchwork which could be made to say anything that anyone wanted it  to say. Besides it had the added benefit of aiding the nascent antisemitism in the Roman Catholic church at that time. John Chrysostom(347-407 A.D.), a contemporary of Augustine, a famous preacher and great orator, preached a series of sermons against the Jewish people, accusing them of murdering their offspring, and worshipping demons. He called their synagogues brothels and den of robbers, and claimed God hated the Jewish people, because, in his view, they murdered Jesus. His conclusion was that God hated the Jews, and Christians were obligated to hate them as well. Do you want to be a  good Christian? Then you had better hate the Jews, he said, because God does. Amillennialism is allied to replacement theology, both of which breed antisemitism. Unfortunately, when the reformers broke from Rome, the battle was fought over justification by faith. And when the protestants and reformers left, they carried in their baggage, the Augustinian amillennial view of prophecy and allegorical method of interpretation. Tragically, most protestant denominations track their origin back to the reformation and remain amillennial in their views.

Whereas amillennialism is a partial and half truth, postmillennialism is totally false. The facts of history belie this view. A morally totally deprave humanity is incapable of such a glorious achievement. Postmillennialism is of more recent origin. It is the brainchild of Daniel Whitby, a 17th century unitarian minister. Whitby was convinced, the gospel like yeast would permeate the entire world with its purifying effects on the hearts of men. As time went on, things would get better and better, until eventually everything would be alright , after a thousand years of man’s progressive improvements, Christ would return.  Postmillennialism was by far the most popular view prior to the first World War. Postmillennialists believed the first World War was the war to end all wars. The peace that would follow they believed would be the evidence the gospel was doing its good job of purifying the hearts of men. However,  after the Second World Wars, it fell into obsolescence, because the second World War dashed the hopes of most postmillennialists, and their adherents diminished in number. The dept of the pit of moral turpitude to which man had fallen was unveiled a bit by  the horrors of the two World Wars, especially the second World War in which up to 60 million of the Earth’s inhabitants perished, including 6 million Jews who perish in the gas ovens and crematoria which Adolf Hitler built all over Europe, 2 million of whom were children, whose lives were snuffed out in the embryo. Of late, the works of some credible advocates have given posmillennilism a new resurgence. Nevertheless, major theological obstacles remain intact. Twenty hundred years of church history argue against this position. There is no evidence that the Church, through the gospel, is purifying the world; but rather, the world is squeezing the Church into its own mold. The upsurge in antisemitism in Europe,  horrors of Kosovo and Srebrenica and Albania, the rise of al Qaida, 9/11, the Arab Spring, Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists, and most recently ISIS and its inhuman treatment of Yazidis, Kurds, Iraqi and Syrian Christians and captured Iraqi and Syrian soldiers leave no one in doubt as the the absudity and  practical impossibility of the concept.

Clearly, premillennialism was the position of the early church for the first four centuries of its existence. The evidence for that fact is considerable and convincing. Whilst that evidence is weighty, it alone cannot be determinative. Premillennialism is based on literal normative interpretation of prophetic scriptures. Words are taken in their ordinary everyday usages, whilst at the same time allowing for figures of speech. The simple and basic thesis of premillennialism is that Jesus will return to the Earth, and will literally reign over the Earth for one thousand years. In other words, Christ will inaugurate and rule over the millennial kingdom.

Revelation Chapter 10: The Strong Angel and The Small Scroll

Verse 1: The Strong Angel.

And a saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with the cloud: and a rainbow was upon His head, and His face was as it were the sun, and His feet as pillars of fire. Who is this mighty or strong angel? There are many views of the identity of the strong angel. The Greek word used here is heteros which means another of a different kind. This angel is a different kind from the seven other angels blowing the trumpets. These other seven angels are of the same kind. The Greek word is “anlos” which means another of the same kind. When we compare scripture with scripture, we see that this angel is no other person than Christ the Son of God. His face was as it were the sun: this signifies righteousness. And His feet as pillars of fire: this signifies judgement. No other angel has the authority to judge the world. God shall judge the world by Jesus whom He has chosen(Acts 10: 42; 17:31). Besides, this is the same description given of Christ in Rev. 1:13-16. There is a similarity between this angel and the appearance of Jehovah in Eze.1:26-28. The personality with the appearance of a man, who had the likeness of the glory of the Lord is a clear reference to Jesus The Christ, the second person of the Trinity. The appearance of this strong angel is similar also to the appearance of the angel who appeared to Daniel in Dan.10:5&6. The content of the message is the same as that of the angel to Daniel. We shall continue with our proof and identification of this angel as Christ in the next verse. However, it not unusual to refer to God as an angel. There is consensus of opinion amongst biblical scholars that unless the context indicates otherwise, Old Testament reference to the angel of God is a reference to the preincarnate Christ. The Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia states that the Old Testament reference to the angel of the Lord is a reference to the second person of the Trinity. In some passages, the OT itself makes it clear that angel of the Lord is a divine being, although the person of the Trinity involved may not be specified. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar in the wilderness, she recognized Him as God and was amazed that she has seen God and lived(Gen. 16:7-13). And the angel of the Lord who appeared to Moses is both Lord and God(Exod. 3:1-4).

Verse 2: “And he had in His right hand a little book open: and he set His foot on the sea, and His left (foot) on the earth.” This angel has control of land and water, that is to say the whole world. Jesus The Christ is the only one who has power and authority over the Earth. This angel has in his right hand the little scroll open. It is Christ who opened the large scroll in Rev.5:1-5. It is most probable the He will also open the small scroll. The large scroll contains the judgement of God. The small also contains the judgement of God. It is Jesus The Christ who has power and authority to execute these judgements. The small scroll is indeed the large scroll with some events unfolded. The large scroll completed some events that ended with the close of the 70th seven. The small scroll on the other hand contains events that will occur after the 70th seven is over.

Verse 3: “He cried with a loud voice as (when) a lion roareth: and when He had cried seven thunders uttered their voices.” In the quotation of verse 3 above I deliberately rendered when in brackets, because it does not exist in the original Greek. In the KJV, it is in italics. Jesus The Christ is the lion of the tribe of Judah who only had prevailed to open the scroll. And when he had roared seven thunders uttered their voices.

Revelation is the book of sevens. And seven is the number of perfection or better still completeness. There are seven seals, sevens angels with seven trumpets, seven angels with seven bowls. The dragon has seven heads, and the Beast also has seven heads. The 70th seven is a period of seven years. There are seven Beast empires, and the 8th is one of the seven revived. There are also seven churches and seven benedictions. It not surprising there are seven thunders. In verse 4, the revelator was about to write what the seven thunders uttered when he heard a voice from heaven saying: seal up what the seven thunders uttered and write them not. No reason was given why the revelator was forbidden to write what the seven thunders uttered. Some bible scholars believe these things were revealed later in the seven bowls. It may be true but will not be dogmatic about it.

In verse 5 & 6, the angel who stands on the the Earth and the sea “lifted up His hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives for and ever, who created heaven and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the seas, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer.” When God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, he sware by Himself(Heb. 4:13). Our Lord Jesus taught that men should make no oat at all(Matt.5:33-37). This further buttresses the fact that the Strong or Mighty Angel is The Lord Jesus. That there should be times no longer implies that the 6th millennia is complete and the Shabbath of the Lord is about to begin. Adams lease is over. And this is indeed the case: for the 70th seven is complete and God Almighty is about to reclaim His Rule over the Earth.

Verse 7: In the days of the voice of the seventh angle when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God shall be finished as He has declared to His servants the prophets. The completion of the mystery of God is the completion of the spiritual salvation of Israel. This shall be about the third day into the 30-day reclamation period. Come let us return to the Lord….. He will raise us up on the third day and we shall live in His sight(Hosea 6:1,2). What is the mystery of God? The mystery of God has three characteristics: it is something which has always been in the plan of God. It was not revealed in the Old Testament but revealed in the New Testament. And it is always known by divine revelation. The mystery is that the Gentiles who are not physical descendants of Abraham shall be grafted in to be become part of the spiritual children of God(Gal.3:29). In order to accomplish this some Israelites who are the natural line of Abraham were cut out, so some Gentiles who are not part of the natural branches may be grafted in(Rom.11:24). What happened to Israel was a partial hardening due to unbelief. If they abide not in unbelief, they shall be grafted back. This is exactly what happens here. When the times of the Gentiles is completed at the expiry of the 70th seven, some Jews were saved to complete the spiritual kingdom of God. The times of the Gentiles is the 70 seven of years allotted to the Gentiles under which Israel shall be under gentile domination, including the gap of time between the 69th and the 70th seven. Therefore the fullness of the Gentiles is technically the completion of the 70th seven. Thereafter the deliverer shall come to Zion and all Israel shall be saved(Rom.11:25,26), thereby completing the spiritual kingdom of God.

The reason for The return of Jesus to the Earth as the strong angel who roars like a lion is to save the remnant of Israel. When He roars like a lion His sons shall come Him trembling from the west(Hosea 11:10,11). The prophet Hosea uses the same phrase here as John the revelator did: cried out with a loud voice as when a roars(Hosea 10:3).

Verse 7-11: Here the revalator, the beloved Apostle John was commanded by the same voice which spoke to him from heaven earlier on to go and take the small scroll from the hand of the strong angel who stands on the land and the sea, whom we have identified to be Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ, the second person of the Trinity. He then went to the Lord and said, give me the scroll. And He said unto him, take it and eat it up; it shall make thy belly bitter, it shall be thy mouth sweet as honey. He took the scroll from His hand and ate it up. It was in his mouth as sweet as honey: but as soon as he had eaten it his belly was made bitter. Eating up the scroll implies a voracious appetite. John ate the scroll voraciously. That was why he able to write it down an pass it over to us. We too must have a voracious appetite for the word, to eat it, declare and proclaim it and pass it on to the next generation.

The scroll contained the remaining judgement of God, the bowls, to be poured upon the wicked earth-dwellers, the bitter part, and the renovation of the Earth after the cleansing from the defilement if sin and the institution of the millennial reign of Christ, the son of God, the sweet part. There is a dichotomy here, the bitter and the sweet. The writer has had a similar experience, some 35 years ago, when, in a vision, I ate the whole Bible. It was sweet like buttered bread. But in real life, the outworking has not been particularly pleasant.

Verse 11: And he said unto him, thou shall prophecy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. Because the revelator ate the word, he had the God given responsibility to declare it to the World, and he did. That is why we have the book of Revelation to read, maul over and heed. When we eat the word, it becomes our responsibility to declare it to the world, no matter what the personal cost may be. Amen.

Revelation Chapter 9. The Wrath Of God: The Trumpet Judgements ctd

The Fifth Trumpet(1-12).

“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.”(Rev.9:1-12).

A Star(1).

When the fifth angel sounded, a star fell from heaven unto the Earth. This is metaphorical. It is not a literal star. Stars are used to describe angels of God as well as saints of God(Job 38:7; Gen.22:17). And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever(Dan.22:3). The star is a supernatural being. The statement that a star fell from heaven is referent to an angel descending from heaven. That this star is an angel is borne out by the fact that a key was given to him. To him indictates personhood. A key cannot be given to a literal star. So, we conclude that this star is angelic being. The rank of this angel we are not told, neither his regalia. The tense of the verbal indicates that the revelator John did not see the angel falling, but saw him after he had already fallen. Jesus our Lord saw Satan falling from heaven(Luk.10:18). Theologically fallen angels represent evil spirits. Is this a fallen angel or an angel of God? Surely this angel is on a divine mission. The key of the bottomless pit was given to him. It is also probable that the angel is a high ranking angel in the service of God Almighty. He is a heavenly policeman, a security agent of sorts. It is unlikely that this key could be given to a fallen angelic being.

The Bottomless Pit(2).

What is the bottomless pit? The bottomless pit is below for the star fell from heaven unto the Earth. It is part of the underworld of the dead. It separated the Hell from Paradise in the OT dispensation(Luk.16:26). It is between Hell and the defunct Paradise. Paradise under the OT dispensation was where the OT saints were kept prior to their being taken to heaven when Our Lord Jesus the Christ rose from the dead(Matt.27:52). Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad(John 8:56). That location in the underworld of the dead is now empty. Paradise in the NT dispensation is synonymous with heaven. The term bottomless is a transliteration of abussos(abyss). It occurs nine times in the NT, seven of them in Revelation. It refers to a place of confinement of supernatural beings. It is the confinement chamber for supernatural powers. The demons in the Gadarine demoniac requested that Jesus not command them to depart into the abyss(Luk.8:33). In Matt.8:29, the demon asked Jesus, have you come to torment us before the time? Clearly, the abyss and the place and time of torment are connected. That the demons are aware of future time when they shall be assigned to the abyss is clear. Equally the abyss will be a place of torment for demons. Revelation 20:3 locates the time of confinement of demons to the abyss and the period of their torment in the same to coincide with the millennial reign of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus the Christ. Satan will also be incarcerated in the abyss for 1000 years. This period of confinement will not be a simple restriction of movement. Rev. 11:7 and 17:8 indicate that the beast that killed the two witnesses and persecuted the people of God during the end times ascended from the bottomless pit. The bottomless pit which is also described as a gulf(Luk.16:26) is where the fallen angels who kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation and cohabited with human females and produced humanoids or transhumans are incarcerated. These hybrid humans called nephelim in Hebrew were annihilated in the deluge, and their demonic fathers incarcerated in the bottomless pit(Gen. 6:1-8; Jude1:6). This segment of angels not only sided with Satan in the great rebellion in eternity past before the creation of Adam, and were therefore locked in unrighteousness, after their expulsion from heaven, but also went further to mingle the human and angelic species. God Almighty, the creator of all things made a distinction between human and angelic beings, but these angels assayed to obliterate that distinction. It was a satanic counter strategy to thwart the redemption of mankind. These demons were so vile that they were not suffered to roam the dark void and the starry heavens like Satan and other fallen angels, but were rather imprisoned in the abyss, awaiting the judgment of the great Day of the Lord(Jud.1:6). Pit translates the Greek word phrear. This word is used three times outside Revelation, in the gospels. It refers to a well from which water is drawn(Luk.14:5; John 4:11,12). A key to the shaft of abyss is a literal translation.

The Locusts(3).

And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. The thick smoke emanating from the abyss was not ordinary smoke, but multitudes of demonic hordes. They were so many and black as Erebus that they darkened the sun and blackened the air. These hordes of demons were so dark and thick they prevented the penetration of the rays of the sun unto the Earth, producing a total eclipse of the sun. Out of the thick smoke emerged locusts upon the Earth. These are not ordinary biological insects called locusts. They are demons with the physiognomy of locusts. They were given power to hurt as the scorpions of the Earth have power.

The Duty Of The Locusts(4-6).

And unto them were given power as the scorpions of the Earth have power. Locusts generally feed on vegetations. These locusts were forbidden by God to do harm to the vegetations of the Earth, but rather commanded by God to hurt those men who have not the seal of God on their foreheads. Theologians call this the passive of divine activity. They were also forbidden by God to kill those who were not God-marked, but rather to torment them for five months. They killed others but were forbidden to die. The righteous did not want to die but was killed. The wicked wants to die but was forbidden death. And their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when stings a man. The venom of a scorpion is poisonous and could kill. But that is very rare. There is a species of scorpion in southern USA whose venom could kill their victims. Mortality from from scorpion sting has been recorded in medical history in that part of the world. But generally scorpion stings are not fatal. Scorpion sting is a bit common in Nigeria but it generally does not lead to death. They could be very painful but usually do not lead to mortality. The writer treated a few in my days of practice of medicine in Nigeria. They usually do well with local anesthetics and analgesics. The writer has been stung by a scorpion and survived without medical treatment, but by no means advocating that. The pain is horrible especially in the early stages after the sting but wears off after a day or two. But it would be a very horrible experience to be stung by scorpions repeatedly without dying. In the immediate period, one can faint and be in shock from scorpion sting. Am sure the Beast and his minions would put screens on their houses and vehicles. But these demons would not be deterred or restrained. They have been prepared for thousands of years by incarceration in the bottomless pit for the judgment of the great day of the Lord( Jud.1:6). Being chained under darkness for thousands of years has made them more vile and wicked than ever. Being loosed, they cannot be restrained by man through the instrumentality of physical barriers insofar as they are spirit beings and cannot be restrained physically. If anyone is stung by scorpion repeatedly, am sure the one would prefer death to life. No wonder these living wicked beast-marked adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast would seek death and desire to die but death will flee from them(6).

The Appearance Of The Locusts(7-10).

The shapes of the locusts were like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were golden crowns, and their faces are like the faces of men. What horrible creatures? Their hairs were like those of women, and their teeth like those of lions. What a terrible combination. This may be an indication that animals were involved in the satanic hybridization programme in the antediluvian world as also said the Jewish rabbis. They had breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of many horses running to battle. Their tails were like those of scorpions. They could sting with their tails like scorpions. And they had power to hurt the beast-marked adorers of the Dragon-Beast for five months.

The King Of The Locusts(11).

Their king is the angel of the bottomless pit. That they have a king suggests order and purpose. The appellative king is interesting because the Scriptures accord no such title to Satan. These creatures have a unique purpose which requires a strict discipline, hence their need of a king. Naturally the locusts have no king(Prov.30:27). There is no contradiction here insofar as these horrific locust-like creatures appear only as locusts. The angel of the abyss is king over these horrible locust-like creatures. The grammatical construction here, genitive subjunctive indicates that the angel is over the bottomless pit. It does not indicate he is from the abyss. The name in Hebrew is Abaddon. The phrase in Hebrew is unique to Johannine expression(John 5:2; 19:13, 17,20; 20:6; Rev.16:16). Some of his audience are Jewish. In the OT, Abaddon is the name of the place of the dead(Prov.15:11; Job 26:6; Ps 88:11). It used as poetic parallel to Shoel in Job 14:11 and Prov.15:11; to death in Job 28:22; and to the grave in Ps 88:11. The Septuagint(LXX) translated the Hebrew term Abaddon as apoleia which means destruction. The Apostle Paul labelled the Man of Lawlessness[the Man of Sin, antiChrist, the Son of Destruction(Abaddon), 2 Thess.2:3]. The Lord Jesus called Judas Iscariot the son of perdition(Abaddon). This is the only place in the Script where a particular angel is explicitly identified with the name Destruction or Destroyer. In the wilderness, those who tempted Christ and murmured were destroyed of the serpent and the destroyer(1 Cor.10:8-10). The death of the ten amongst the spies in Num.14 were credited to the destroyer(Heb.11:28). In Egypt, prior to the exodus, the death of the first born was credited to the destroyer(Exod.12:23). God’s punishment of the wicked is always accomplished by the destroyer. In Greek, he is called Apollyon. John also intends a Greek audience amongst his readers. Apollyon is a derivative of the Greek verb “apollunai” which means to destroy. Therefore, the angel of the abyss is the destroyer. It is not Satan but a subordinate angelic being committed to the task of destroying the enemies of God. He is one of Satan’s high ranking demons. He is probably a principality or power of sorts(Eph.3:10). The names in both Greek and Hebrew mean the same thing, destroyer or destruction. He commands these locusts. He tells them what to do. Where did he get his power? From God ?

The First Woe(12).

The last three trumpet judgments are called woes or rather result in woes. They are the most severe of the seven trumpet judgments.

The Sixth Trumpet judgment(13-21).

“And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”(Rev.9:13-21).

Whilst the fifth trumpet judgment tormented its victims without killing them, the sixth trumpet judgment killed a third of the living wicked earth-dwellers who worship and adore the Dragon-beast.

A Voice From The Golden Altar(13,14).

At the sounding of the sixth trumpet the revelator heard a voice from the horns of the golden altar of incense which is before God. Frequently the revelator hears a voice. We assume also that he saw since he was in the spirit and his view unobstructed. The voice must be the voice of the angel of the golden altar of incense where the fifth seal martyrs were kept prior to their glorification. He appears to administer the wrath of God inasmuch as they are divine response in answer to the prayers of the saints calling out for vengeance for their lives which were terminated by the beast-marked adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast. The horns of the altar signal a place of power and authority. So the voice emanating from the horns of the golden altar of incense must be that of a very powerful angel. He is probably higher in rank than the seven angels administering the seven trumpets, insofar as he gives orders to one of the seven angels administering the seven trumpets. This angel was before God. In other words he was acting under the orders of the Almighty. He spoke to the angel who had the sixth trumpet, saying, loose the four Angels which are bound in the great River Euphrates. Obviously the four angels bound in the great River Euphrates are fallen angelic beings called demons. So they are evil spirits. Unlike the angels who did not keep their first estate, we do not know what other acts that these four evil spirits committed that led to their being bound in the Euphrates River other than joining in the great satanic revolt in eternity past. Whatever it was, it is of recent, considering the period of their imprisonment in the great River Euphrates.

The Four Angels Bound In The Great River Euphrates(15).

The voice of the angle emanating from the horns of the golden altar of incense which was before God instructed the angel with the sixth trumpet to loose the four evil spirits incarcerated in the great River Euphrates. These evil angels were prepared for an hour, a day, a month and a year in order for them to slay the third part of the living wicked earth-dwellers and adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast. What is the meaning of a day, a month and a year? Is it literal or its it some kind of a formula? That is difficult to say. In the absence of interpretation somewhere else in the a Scriptures, we presume it is literal. One of the principles of biblical hermeneutics is scripture must interpret scripture.

The Demonic Killing Machines(16-19).

The moment these four horrible creatures were released from their incarceration in the Great River Euphrates, the result was immediate; the raising of armoured divisions amounting to two hundred million soldiers. The revelator described them as cavalries mounted on horsebacks. This is understandable since that was what was known in his day. However these are modern amoured divisions with most sophisticated and latest of modern tanks, equipped with the latest in military laser technology. And I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. These sophisticated killing machines equipped with the latest in modern military technology have the capacity to set ablaze and incinerate their victims. By these three were the third part of man killed, by the fire, smoke and brimstone that issued out of their mouths. Their power was in their mouths and in their tails: for their tails were like serpents, and have heads, and with them they do hurt. These killing machines have the capacity to fire in both directions. This is not fiction. Though films have been produced in Hollywood portraying these machines and their operators, they are available in one form or the other as robots equipped with artificial intelligence(AI). In the event of world war, the U.S. Military and others like Israel, China, Russia, Britain etc can field robotic soldiers and tanks capacable of accomplishing the kind of devastation graphically portrayed in this vision. These monumental killing machines have the capacity to pulverize and annihilate their victims in a matter of seconds.

The Reaction Of The Survivors(20,21).

Inspite of the havoc just wreaked by these killing machines, wiping out a third of all living earth-dwellers, the survivors repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk. As we have pointed out, apart from the enlivened images of the Beast-antiChrist located at strategic places to identify and cause to be killed those who do not have the mark of the sea-beast, the beast-marked adorers were also instructed by the second beast, the enforcer to make images of the beast to keep and worship in their homes. These images though lifeless in and of themselves are demonized. So, as they bowed to these images, they bowed to demons. Apart from blatant idolatry, these living wicked earth-dwellers practised sorceries, murdered the saints of God and those who did not take the mark of the beast, committed sexual immoralities and purloined. As we have pointed out earlier sin is a cicatrizant; it sears the soul and hardens the heart. These men have sinned beyond repentance. No matter the severity of the punishment, they will never repent.

Revelation Chapter 8. The Wrath Of God: The Trumpet Judgements

Background To The Wrath Of God.

Revelation chapter 6 marks the starting point of the 70th seven of Daniel which corresponds with the signing of the seven-year peace treaty between the many from within Israel and the Man of sin(Dan.9:27). This treaty is dubbed the covenant with Death or agreement with Hell by the prophet Isaiah(Is.28:15). Precisely at the midpoint of the 70th seven, Satan, the great red Dragon is cast down to Earth from his abode in the dark void and starry heavens unto the Earth. He is filled with wrath because he knowest that he has but a short time(Rev.12:7-12). He possesses the sea-beast, gives him his power, seat and great authority(Rev.13:2). The Beast-antiChrist relocates his headquarters to Jerusalem(Dan.11:45), erects a statue of himself in the Holy Of Holies of the rebuilt Jewish temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, and demands worship of all mortals(Matt.24:15; Rev.13:15,16). This is the abomination that maketh desolate spoken of by Daniel the prophet. It marks the starting point of the great tribulation. This is the wrath of Satan directed against the Jews and Christians and any other persons who reject the mark and worship of the Dragon-Beast. At the breaking of the sixth seal, there are earthly and cosmic disturbances which interrupts the great tribulation. The great tribulation is cut short, because if not, no person who rejects the mark and worship of the Dragon-Beast would be alive; for the elect’s sake, those days shall be shortened(Matt.24:22). With the breaking of the sixth seal God Almighty announces to the living wicked earth-dwellers He is about to pour out His wrath on the adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast. At this point all the inhabitants of the Earth shall know that the God of Israel is the one and only true God, and that every other god is false. That He is real: that He made us not we ourselves(Ps.100:3). That evolution is a scientific farce. Then they will hide themselves in the rocks and mountains, calling on the rocks and mountains to fall upon them and to hide them from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of His wrath is come and who shall be able to stand( Rev.6:15-17). They will begin to wail and weep(Matt.24:30). But before the wrath of God is poured out on the living wicked dwellers and adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast, God Almighty raptures the elect of God and seals the 144,000 who fled into protective custody in red rose city of Petra and the Judean wilderness when the abomination of desolation was instituted at the rebuilt Jewish temple on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem(Matt. 24:16) as we have seen in Chapter 7. The wrath of God or the wrath of the Lamb begins with the breaking of the seventh seal in Chapter 8. The seventh seal is the only thing that hides the content of the Scroll. The content of the scroll is the eschatological wrath of God. So far there is chronological order in the narrative of the book of Revelation.

The Breaking Of The Seventh Seal (1,2).

AND when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

The situation on the Earth at this time is dire. The sixth seal has darkened the heavens and frozen the Earth. The appearance of the Son Of Man in the heavens has dispelled the darkness and defrost the Earth. The elect are raptured and the 144,000 sealed. The wrath of God is about to begin. The Day of the Lord or the Day of His Wrath is a day of darkness and gloominess(Zeph 1:15). There is no light in it(Amos 5:18-20).

When He broke the seventh seal there was silence in heaven. The breaking of the seventh seal calls for solemnity in heaven because it marks the starting point of the wrath of God. God’s longsuffering(Greek~macrotumia~largeness of heart) has run its course. There would be no more delays, no more postponements, no more tarrying for the wicked to repent. Hence the silence in heaven for half an hour. Every angelic activities stopped. Here John the revelator was relating to the incident in human terms. In heaven, there is no time. The reference to time here is anthropomorphic. In verse 2, seven angels were standing before God. We are not told the names and ranks and regalia of these seven angels. Thy must be of high rank to stand before God the Father, although every angel at one time or the other stands before God. To stand before God means to stand in His presence, to minister to Him, to answer to God. These seem to have a continual ministry in the presence of the Father. They were given seven trumpets. The wrath of God consists of two series of plagues. Each of these two series, consists of seven plagues. The first series of seven plagues are the seven trumpets. The second series of seven plagues are the seven bowls. Each of these plagues is administered by an angel. The seventh seal itself has no judgement of its own but opens into the seven trumpets. So also the seventh trumpet has no judgement of its own but opens into the seven bowls.

The Incense Of Prayers(3-4).

And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.

And another angel came and stood at the altar. This is the angel of the altar. He had a golden censer. There was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of the saints upon the golden altar which was before the Throne. This is the same altar we identified as the altar under which the fifth seal martyrs were kept, awaiting the completion of the number of saints to be killed. It is the golden altar of incense which is in the sanctuary or the Holy place. It is from this altar, they cried out to God for vengeance(Rev.6:9-11). This angel probably ministered to the fifth seal martyrs while awaiting vengeance. These souls have now been raptured. They have received their eternal immortal resurrection bodies with other saints at the Rapture(Rev.7:9-17). They are no longer under the altar. They have no more cares, no more worries. Though they are no more calling to God for vengeance. He remembers He has promised to answer. He is the faithful God. He is just and righteous. The prayers of the saints, most especially those of the fifth seal martyrs ascended as aromas to heaven and were stored away. The prayers of these precious souls are now mingled with incense and offered to God at the throne room of the temple in heaven as odours of sweet aromas, sweet smelling savours, sacrifices acceptable, well pleading to God(Phil.4:18). This is appropriate because God is about to answer their prayers. Our righteous prayers are stored away in heaven as aromatic bars in valises, and are offered to God in time of remembrance. When they are mingled with incense and offered to God, He perceives the sweet aromas and answers our prayers. Therefore we should persevere in our prayers though it takes long for Him to answer.

Prelude To The Seven Trumpets(5 & 6).

And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

In verse 4, the smoke of the incense together with the prayers of the saints ascended before God out of the hand of the angel of the golden altar. What a wonderful and glorious scene in heaven, God Almighty perceiving the aromas of the prayers of His martyred saints as He prepares to punish the living wicked earth-dwellers and adorers and worshippers of the Dragon-Beast. And the angel of the golden altar of incense took the censer, and filled with fire from the altar, and cast it into the Earth: and there were voices, thundering, lightnings and an earthquake. We have seen that thundering and lightnings emanate from heaven when God Almighty is praised and worshipped in loud voices of men and of angels. The effect on Earth is tremendous. There was a horrible earthquake. It is time for God to pour out His wrath upon the Earth. Therefore the seven angels with the seven trumpets prepared themselves to blow the trumpets.

The First Trumpet: One-Third Of Green Vegetations Burnt(7).

The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

The first angel sounded, there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the Earth. Hail and fire? yeah! But blood? Where did that come from? Is it the blood of the Lamb or the martyred saints? We are not told. The effect was very damaging and devastating on green vegetation. The third part of the trees were burnt up, and every green grass was burnt up. This would lead to the death of animals that are supported by green vegetation. There would be worsening of erosion, deforestation and desertification. Lifestock farmers would be severely affected. This would worsen the famine already caused by the first four seals. Those who do not have the mark of the beast are in hiding. Their food supply must come from whatever they stowed away previously. For the beast-marked adorers and worshippers who depend on daily supplies, starvation would set in. Vegetation provide protection for human and animal life. The loss of vegetation would lead to epidemics of communicable and parasitic diseases. Man exhales carbon and takes in oxygen. The oxygen generated by plants through the process of photosynthesis is given out. With the green vegetation almost gone, the percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere will be drastically reduced. The combustion of green vegetation will result in higher percentage of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. This will lead to increase in respiratory diseases. There will be increase in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Many of these patients will die from pulmonary and cardiac failures. At this time, there will be no functional hospital, no organized medical care what so ever. The Earth will be in a state of utter chaotic confusion.

The Second Trumpet: Pollution Of One-Third Of The Salt Water Sources(8 & 9).

And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

The second trumpet resulted in great mountain burning with fire being cast into the sea. Because of the use of the definite article the, it would mean all seas were affected. It affected a third part of all the seas. A third part of the seas became blood. The third part of the seas would become toxic, killing all forms of life in the seas. The viscosity of blood would not permit sea-going vessels. This would mean the loss of a third of all vessels in the salt water sources, the seas and the oceans with both the crews and the passengers. A huge portion of the world food supply come from the seas and oceans. A third of this supply would be lost. There would be shortages of seafoods.

The Third Trumpet: Wormwood And The Pollution Of One-Third Of The Fresh Water Sources(10,11).

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

When the third angel blew his trumpet, a great star fell from the heavens. Could this be really a star? The sun is one of the smallest stars. It is 93 million miles away from the Earth. If it would get closer, our planet would melt away. If it would get farther we would be frozen to death. John was using the vocabulary of his day and age to communicate biblical truth. It is most probably a meteorite or part of a disintegrated supernova. It was burning like a lamp. It fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters. The plague targeted a third part of the fresh water sources: rivers, fountains and fresh water lakes. This star or meteorite or whatever it might be has a name. The name is wormwood. Wormwood is an ancient antihelmintic. It is very bitter. It is not known to be toxic except in cases of over dosage. It’s bitterness helps to expel worms from the intestines. However this wormwood Would lead to the pollution of a third of the fresh water sources. The waters themselves became wormwood as a result of the pollution. The water from these sources would become very bitter. And many men died from the waters because they were made bitter. This star called Wormwood will make these bodies water undrinkable. The bitterness here is indicative of its toxicity. This star falling into the fresh water sources would kill all forms of life in these waters both plant and animals due to the toxic nature of this wormwood. The waters would be polluted from decaying organic mater and become very toxic. Besides, vessels, crew and passengers and cargoes in the affected fresh water sources would be lost. Any chemical, biological or nuclear material amongst the cargoes would lead to severe pollution of the fresh water sources. Perhaps this is what is meant by John the revalator, in a layman’s language, by the waters were made bitter.

The Fourth Trumpet: One-Third Of The Sun, Moon, And Stars Darkened(12).

And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

The fourth trumpet resulted in the darkening of a third part of the sun, moon and stars. It is difficult to understand what kind of changes that would go on the starry heavens that would produce this kind of effect in the sun, moon and stars. It would probably last for a day, about 24 hours or thereabouts; for the day will not not shine for a third part of it and the night likewise. We are not told the effect on the planet Earth and its dwellers. It would be very severe.

The Angelic Announcement(13).

And I beheld and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, to the inhabited of the earth by reason of the other voice of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

The revelator heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with the loud voice, woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants of the Earth by reason of the trumpets of the three angels who are yet to blow their trumpets. Some translations read an eagle flying in mid heaven. This would make case for the identity of the angle as one of the four beasts or living creatures with the face of an eagle. We are not told who this horizontal moving angel is, nor his station nor regalia. He is probably a high ranking angel to be committed with such responsibility. The revalator did not say that he saw this angel. It is possible to hear a voice and not see the speaker. In this context, it is most probable that he saw the angel; for he was in the spirit, and nothing was obstructing his view. The angel makes it clear that the living wicked earth-dwellers, the adorers of the Dragon-Beast are the intended victims of the trumpet judgments. They are consistently portrayed in the scroll of Revelation as the enemies of God and the object of His wrath. The last three trumpet judgements are going to be more severe. Therefore they are called the three woes or culminate in the three woes. Their severity is clearly emphasized.

Revelation Chapter 7: The sealing of the 144,000, And The Multitude Which No Man Could Number

At the breaking of the sixth seal, the universe is darkened and the Earth frozen. There was no permanent destruction to the Sun, Moon and Stars. There are some that assign permanent destruction to the Sun, Moon and Stars at the breaking of the sixth seal. It is only by ignoring textual details and maximizing similarities between the sixth seal, the fourth trumpet and fourth bowl that one can make a case against limited cessation of light during the breaking of the sixth seal. At the outpouring of the fourth bowl judgment, the Sun scotched men severely with great heat, they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues, and they repented not to give Him glory(Rev.16:8,9). This implies there was no permanent destruction to the Sun, Moon and Stars at the breaking of the sixth seal. Whatever happened at the breaking of the sixth seal was limited in duration. It is the appearance of The Son Of Man in the heavens, the Shekinah, to seal His servants and rescue the saints that would dispel the darkness and defrost the Earth.

The Avenging Angels( 1).

After these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the Earth, holding the four winds of the Earth, that the wind should not blow on the Earth, nor on the sea, nor any tree.

After these things is a phrase and a popular formula that John uses to introduce another unit of vision or material. It indicates a new sequence, but not necessarily a new time factor. There are four angels. We are not told who they are, their rank or regalia. They are avenging angels. They are playing a restraining role now until the servants of God are sealed. Thereafter the Earth shall be reaped. They are certainly amongst the angelic reapers. They hold the four winds of the Earth. They are high ranking and powerful to hold the four winds of the Earth. They are controlling angels. They are positioned at the four corners of the Earth. That means they control the whole Earth. The significance of their position lies in the fact that they control the whole Earth, the Sea and the Trees. The four winds of the Earth indicate the fours cardinal points, East, West, North and South( Jer.49:36; Eze.37:9; Dan.7:2; 8:8 & 11:4). They are holding the four winds in order that the wind would not blow on the whole Earth. This is the purpose of the restraining angels. They are holding back the wind. We are not told why the winds needs to be restrained, but the implication is danger. If the wind is let lose, it would cause great destruction on the Earth. They are going to let it lose anyway, but only after the servants of God has been sealed in their foreheads. Therefore only those who are divinely protected would be safe from the blowing wind.

The Sealing Angel(2 & 3).

And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the Earth and the sea, saying hurt not the Earth, neither the Sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Here another angel is introduced. He is ascending from the East, the rising of the Sun. Again we are not told who he is nor his rank or regalia. But he has the seal of God. He must be a high ranking angel to bear the seal of God. We are not told what this seal looks like; it is not explicitly defined but is God’s seal. We are not told what the sealing is for. But seals generally are for authentication, identification, ownership and protection. It was given the four previously introduced angels to hurt the Earth. Therefore they are avenging angels. But must play a restraining role until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads. In verse 3, the sealing angel calls on the four avenging angels not to hurt the Earth, the Sea, and the Trees till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. It is stated explicitly the Earth, the Sea and the Trees are about to be hurt by the wrath of God; this must not be done until the servants of God have been sealed for protection. Why must the Earth itself, the Sea and the Trees be hurt. Is this an undeserved wrath? When Adam fell so did the whole Earth. The whole creation groaneth and travaileth together in pain until….(Rom.8:18-22). The whole creation locked in perpetual fallen state is about to begin its journey to rebirth. Like its redeemer, The Christ, it must suffer before its ultimate freedom. To be cleansed from the defilement of Sin, it must be salted with fire.

The sealing process itself is done by multiple number of angels. This is quite understandable considering the number to be sealed. We do not know the exact number of angels involved. The sealing is to prevent harm. The people sealed are called “sunduloi,” that is slaves or bond-servants. This term is used of believers also. But it is not clear here whether these bond-servants have the same relationship as we have with Christ today.

The 144,000(4-8).

“And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe Asher were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Naphlatlim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Menasses were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zebulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of true tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.”

Of the children of Israel were sealed twelve thousand from each of the twelve tribes. The total is 144,000. Why twelve thousand were chosen from each of the twelve tribes, we are not told. In Hebrew numerology and gematria, 12 can be broken down to 10 and 2. Ten is the number of completeness and 2 is that of unity. Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. It is like the previous ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aharon’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garment; as the dew of Hermon; as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore(Ps 133:1-3). Two cannot work together except they be agreed(Amos 3:3). Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift his fellow: buth woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. If one prevail against him, two shall withstand him. If two lie together, they have heat; but how can one be warm alone(Eccl.4:9-22a). It is not good for man to be alone; I will make him a help meet for him( Gen.2:18). Ten itself can be broken down to 7 and 3. Seven is the divine number of perfection and 3 stands for the Trinity and love. Besides, a three fold cord is now easily broken(Eccl.4:12b). Thousand stands for multitude. We do not dare suggest that the number is more than 144,000. But it may be representative, a kind of firstfruits of the children of Israel. In chapter 14, they stand with the Lamb on Mount Zion. They are redeemed from the Earth. They are not defiled with women. They are virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever He goeth. They were the only ones on Earth who could sing the new song sang by the redeemed in Heaven(Rev. 14:1-5). Obviously they are not believers in Jesus as we are today, else would they be raptured with the multitude which no one could number. They were sealed for protection. They were initially secluded in the rose red city of Petra, the Judean wilderness and perhaps in Jerusalem, in cellars and underground basements and bonkers, from where they were rescued, by the Lamb and taken to Mount Zion, where He reclaimed God’s rule over the Earth at the sounding of the 7th trumpet and the surviving remnants of Israel reconciled to God shortly before.

We see that Dan is omitted from the list, and Joseph is included. It is speculated that this is so because Dan was given to idolatry. They forcefully took the idol from the house of Micah(Judges 17). When the kingdom divided after the death Solomon, Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, set his idols in Bethel and Dan(1 Kings 12:25-30). Even in NT times, the whole area of Dan was given to Idolatry. The Greek god of Pan was worshipped in Dan. The shrine is there to this day at Banias at the foot of the the Hermon.

The right of primogeniture belonged Reuben, but he lost it when he engaged in incestus relation with his father’s concubine(Gen.35:22; 49:3-4). Judah, thou art the one thy brethren shall praise(Gen.49:7-12). So leadership went to Judah. But the double portion of the firstborn went to Joseph for his faithfulness(Gen.48:5,15-22). Jacob adopted his two grandchildren, Ephraim and Menasses . What is not clear here is why Joseph is mentioned instead of Ephraim. The double portion of Joseph is in Ephraim and Menasseh. Menasseh is mentioned, and Ephraim replaced with his father Joseph, which I consider somewhat redundant and tautological. But the revelator told us what he heard and saw. Ephraim was probably omitted beacuse of idolatry in the ten northern tribes with which it was synonymous. Levi was included, so also Simeon. Remember their terrible anger in wiping out the people of Shechem, in the matter of their sister Dinah(Gen.34;49:5-7). Their father Jacob promised to scatter them in Israel. But Levi redeemed himself when he killed his brethren when they were joined to idols in Baalpeor(Ex.32:26-28). Nevertheless his inheritance was scattered amongst the other tribes when he received the priesthood instead of the firstborn from every tribe. Simeon never redeemed himself. His inheritance was within the territory of Judah. In the Millennium, in the new land grants, Dan shall be given a portion, so also Simeon. The priests, the sons of Zadok, and the Levites shall haven their portion in the vicinity of the millennial temple in Jerusalem(Eze. 37 & 38).

The Multitude Which No One Could Number(9 & 10).

“After this I beheld, and, lo, a multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindred, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying, salvation to our God who sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb.”

After this is a phrase John uses to introduce another unit of vision. In this unit of vision John saw an innumerable multitude. This a metaphor. It indicates that this group of people is a very large crowd. The Greek literally says much or many group. This however does not mean this group cannot be counted. Given time and resources one could count them. Unlike the previous group consisting only of Israelites and a limited number of 144,000, 12,000 from each of the twelve tribes of Israel, this group consists of a large crowd, from all colours and races, tongues and nations, including Jews and Gentiles. The innumerable multitude represents a universal gathering. They stood before the throne. This is a heavenly scene in contrast to the earthly scene of 144,000. They are not arriving; they have already arrived. They are not assembling, they have assembled. This is a finished product. They were clothed in white robes. These earthlings in Heaven have bodies. To survive in Heaven, these bodies must be glorified eternal immortal resurrection bodies. Unlike the fifth seal martyrs under the altar in Heaven, souls without bodies who received white robes later, this innumerate multitude are already clothed in white robes. They have arrived, they have assembled, and they are clothed in white robes. The implication of this should not be lost on anyone. Their job is finished. Their work is over. They have arrived. They are glorified.

They have palm branches in their hands. In the ancient Neareast, palm branches signify, victory, triumph and peace. And this immediately reminds us of Our Lord’s triumphal entry in Jerusalem(John 12:13). In that incident, the multitude waved Palm branches before the Lord saying, Hosannah, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosannah means save now please. In contrast to that crowd at the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, this great innumerable multitude is not asking God for salvation, neither is God in need of salvation, but rather praising God in recognition of the fact that salvation comes from and belongs to God only. God the Father, and God the Son are the only source of salvation, redemption and victory and peace. Salvation to our God who sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb. The praise and worship is toward God the Father, and God the Son, who alone have redeemed humanity. Here the Holy Spirit is not mentioned, but it is understood that praise to one person of the Trinity is praise to all. The Holy Spirit does not praise and worship Himself, but rather directs us to worship the Father and the Son.

The Angelic Chorus(11 & 12).

And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, Amen: blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgivings, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Unlike the universal orchestra in chapter 5, the choir increased in reverse geometric progression. First the innumerable multitude, then all the angels, which also happens to be an innumerable multitude. From the outer reaches of the throne to the centre of the throne. The four and twenty elders and then, those closest to the throne, the four beasts. They all worshipped God, saying, Amen. Amen is a Hebrew acrostic meaning, God is a faithful King. They acknowledged His faithfulness, and worshipped Him in a sevenfold doxology, saying, blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. The sevenfold doxological predicate, preceded by an Amen, concludes with an Amen. The number 7 is the divine number of perfection in Hebrew numerology and gematria. Its use here, as in other places on the scroll of Revelation, indicates the perfected nature of end time events.

The Identity Of The Innumerable Multitude(13 & 14).

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, what are these who are arrayed in white robes? And whence came they? And I said unto him, sir, thou knowest. And he said unto me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

One of the elders asked the revelator the questions, who are these who are arrayed in white robes, and from where do they come? The questions were asked not in ignorance, but to generate discussion, in order that he the elder might instruct the revelator; for the elder was in the know. The revelator answered, sir, thou knowest. The elder answered the question in reverse order. This is an NT methodology(Matt.24:3-31). The elder began by answering the second question first, from whence do they come? He did not say specifically where they came from, but a specific time is indicated. They came out of the great tribulation. The great tribulation is not a place but a period of time(Mark 13:19). Daniel 12:1 calls it a time of distress. But it is also obvious it took place on Earth. The locale is the whole Earth. It may have been worst in some places on Earth, but it happened all over the Earth. The epicenter is Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. The question is full of interpretative insights, and whence anticipates a specific location. The innumerable multitude came out of the Great Tribulation. The Great Tribulation took place at a specific time on Earth, but not a specific place. Those or the ones who come out of great tribulation is a Greek substantival participle. This group is not in the process of coming individually but have come as a group. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Overcomers are clothed in white garments(Rev.3:5). The Laodiceans were counseled to purchase raiment so that their nakedness do not appear(Rev.3:18). Not all these arrivals are martyrs. Some did die, but there is no evidence they were all martyred. They have washed their robes and made white in the blood of the Lamb. This answered the first question. The innumerable multitude are those who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. The blood is the symbol of life. This means that the atoning work of Jesus secured eternal redemption for the innumerable multitude. This pretty well defined the group, believers in Jesus taken to heaven at the Rapture of the saints.

The Blessedness Of The Innumerable Multitude(15-17).

Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them nor any heat. For the Lamb who is the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

These innumerable multitude are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night. There is a throne in Heaven where the Father holds court as Sovereign Lord of the universe. In the Millennium, there will be a throne room in the millennial temple on Mount Zion which shall be contiguous with the New Jerusalem. It is likely that it is this temple that is intended here. It may not be necessary to make a distinction between the two, because service to the Son is service to the Father and vice versa. They are before The Lord because of their salvation which they owe to The Lamb. Day and night refers to the unceasing nature and timelessness of praise and worship. They shall join the eternal adorers in Heaven in the praise and worship of God. God’s presence shall dwell amongst them for ever and ever. The removal of physical, environmental, and emotional discomforts implies they are resurrected saints. Wearing glorified eternal immortal resurrection bodies, these saints are no longer subject to the temporal frailties of the mortal body. Living fountains of waters implies the abundant life of the glorified saints.

Revelation Chapter 6: The Breaking Of The Seals

Rev. 6 marks the starting point of the last and 70th seven of Daniel’s 70 seven prophecy(Dan. 9:27). Here the seals of the scroll which Jesus the Son of God took from the hand of The Father in Rev. 5 are being broken. Although Jesus The Christ is in sovereign control, because He has the scroll, the title deed of the Earth, because the Father has committed all judgement to Him, He is not directly responsible for the events of the first four seals. The events of the first four seals represent the wrath of Satan(Rev.12:12). It is clear that the first four seals are different from the final three, a distinction also recognized in the trumpets. In addition the breaking of a seal inaugurates the events of that seal. Therefore, what is the relationship of the Lamb to these events? Is the Lamb directly or indirectly responsible for these events? These are prophesied events of the future which God superintends to ensure fulfillment. All events on Earth are controlled by Heaven. The first four seals are broken in Heaven to allow the riders to ride on Earth. God allows evil but is never the author or the agent of it’s execution. The last three seals and the trumpet and bowl judgements represent the wrath of God. The wrath of Satan is against the saints of God and any one else who refused the mark of the beast for any reason whatsoever, whilst the wrath of God is against the antiChrist, the sea-beast and his minions who have the Mark Of The Beast.

The Emergence Of The antiChrist: The Beginning Of Sorrows(Rev.6:1-5).

The events of the first seal mark the starting point of the 70th seven of Daniel, and it’s first half, the first three and one-half years. This is also dubbed the beginning of sorrows or beginning birth pangs. And all these are the beginning of sorrows(Matt 24:8).

The 70th seven of Daniel, also called the 70th week, or the Tribulation period(pretribs) is a seven year period based on the Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar is lunar. Each months consists of 30 days. Therefore each year is 360 days. The seven year period is divided into two equal halves. Each half consists of three and one-half years, 42 months or 1,260 days. The first three and one-half years is called the beginning of sorrows. The second three and one-half years, comprising the great tribulation and the initial part of the wrath of God is the real hard labour or travail. It is within this context and scenario that the events of Rev. 6 occur.

The First Seal: The White Horse And Rider, The False Christ(verses 1 & 2).

And I saw when the Lamb opened one the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, come and see. And I saw, behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

As we explained in Rev.5, the seals are on the outside of the scroll. There are seven of them. Although the scroll is written within and without, it can only be opened and the contents revealed after the seals are broken. The Lord Jesus is in sovereign control of the breaking of these seals. The first four seals are administered by the four beasts. When the first seal is broken by the Lamb who has the authority to do so, as God’s representative in the earthly realm of universal kingdom, the revelator heard as it were the noise of thunder. One of the four beasts said, come and see. What he saw was a white horse. He that sat on it had a bow, but the bow was empty, it had no arrows in it. The rider also had a crown, implying he was a sitting and reigning king. Crown means authority or right to rule. That this was given to him indicted the rider does not take authority, but that it was given to him. This is an example of passive voice in which the subject is acted upon instead of doing the acting. In other words the subject receives the action. The giver is not explicitly identified in this context, but we know from Rev.13:2 that it is Satan. But ultimately however, it is God. There is no power but of God; all the powers that be are ordained of God(Rom.13:1). He went forth conquering, and to conquer. Biblical scholars are agreed that this first rider upon a white horse is the antiChrist. The Greek word “anti” means in place of and against. The antiChrist is not only against the true Christ, he is in His stead. He is the counterfeit Christ. Whatever the true Christ does, he copies and mimics. He is a copycat. When Christ comes at Armageddon, He shall ride upon a white horse. And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called faithful and true, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war(Rev.19:11). The antiChrist shall come riding upon a white horse too. He has a bow but there are no arrows in the bow. This is subtle peace diplomacy. Like his prefigure, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, he shall try to conquer by flattery, political intrigue and outright deceit. He is the consummate politician. He is the false Christ, therefore everything about him is false. Subtle peace diplomacy shall lead him only so far before he switches tactics and strategy to war and brute force. Having earlier gained control of the three power base nations and subsequently formed a ten nation coalition, he resorts to political intrigue to gain control of the whole world.

There is a consensus of opinion amongst biblical scholars of the parallelism between Rev. 6 and Matt.24. Here the rider upon a white horse equals the emergence of false christs. Many shall come in my name, saying, I am The Christ, and shall deceive many(Matt. 24:5). In Matthew, the emphasis is on the religious aspect. There are many false christs but there is also the ultimate false Christ called the antiChrist. The antiChrist shall raise an army of false christs who shall go out to deceive. This is false religion personified in the antiChrist, the sea-beast who goes out to conquer by deception. On the other hand, in Rev.6, the emphasis is on the political aspect of the Man of sin. He shall attempt to conquer the World by subtle peace diplomacy.

The Second Seal: The Red Horse And Rider, War(verses 3 & 4).

“And when He had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, come and see. There went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the Earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto Him a great sword.”

At the breaking of the second seal, a red horse and rider emerged. This is the same Beast-antiChrist. He is now riding on a red horse. Here also, as always, he tries to copy The True Christ. Red is the symbol of judgement and bloodshed. It also signals redemption. Power was granted unto him, an indication that a third party is controlling these events. When a judge changes to a red robe from retirement in his chambers when court is session, he delivers a death sentence. When The True Christ treads the winepress of the Earth, His white garment shall be stained red with the life blood of his victims. Here also the Beast-antiChrist plays judge and executor of wrath upon the insubordinate. He also acts as a false redeemer of the world. He rides upon a red horse. Subtle peace diplomacy has failed to win the whole world over to him. He has now resorted to brute force. He is no longer wearing an empty bow. He now has a sword, a great sword for that matter. But the sword was given to him, probably by Satan, the usurper, his overlord, who up to this time has the authority over the Earth. Therefore, there shall be wars and rumours of wars. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled; for these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom(Matt. 24:6-7a). Remember that apart from the Eighth And Final Beast Empire, consisting of the ten nation confederation, there are other nations in existence on Earth at this time. The Beast-antChrist does not have control of all of them. Some of them are allies of his empire. Others are opposed, and a few are neutral. Therefore there shall be wars in diverse places as nations jockey for power and position and dominance. It was given unto him to take peace from the Earth. This suggests that the rider’s influence shall be worldwide. This does not however mean that all the nations of the Earth shall be at war, but the condition and climate of the Earth shall be one of warfare and unrest. That they should slay one another connotes violence and savagery. This does not mean that all nations will be at war, but that many will be at war and death will be brutal. A great sword is symbolic of authority to put to death(Rom.13:4). Here again the agency of the third party is required, proving once again that what Heaven authorizes, Earth executed.

The Third Seal: The Black Horse And Rider, Famine (5 & 6).

“And when He had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, a measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see that thou hurt not the oil and the wine.”

At the breaking of the third seal, a black horse and rider emerged. It is famine. War will naturally lead to famine. As cities and nations are destroyed, so also are businesses. The population is in motion. As refugees flock from one area to another, whatever is left is eaten up even as by locusts. And there is no time to farm. And there shall be famines, and pestilence, and earthquakes, in diverse places(Matt. 24:7b). The insanitary conditions resulting from war would lead to epidemics and pandemics of communicable disease. These will have their toll on human population and livestock. Wars can worsen climate change, create erratic weather patterns, leading to tsunamis, swelling of the oceans, excessive monsoon rain and flooding, and extreme temperature and extreme dearth. Food shall be so scarce that a man’s daily wage can scarcely put food on the table for the family. A pair of scales represents the dire situation that some will face on Earth. It indicates that weighed bread is a condition of severe famine(Lev. 26:26; Eze. 4:16,17). A balance scale will be used to weigh food only in severe famine. The word translated penny is “denarius,” which in the Roman Empire at that time was a man’s daily wage. With the current development in technology, any world war will devastate the Earth and lead to earth tremors and earthquakes and tsunamis. But there is a call not to hurt the oil and the wine. The statement, see thou hurt not the oil and the wine is difficult to interpret. There is no consensus of opinion as to its meaning. Wine and oil come from olives and grapes, the second of two harvests in the ancient Neareast. It may be that olives and grapes are spared destruction. However, since both oil and wine symbolize the Holy Spirit, it would seem here that God shall see and preserve His people through it all. The events of the third seal bring closure to the first three and one-half years.

The Second Three And One-half Years.

The events of the fourth seal mark the beginning of the second three and one-half years, the second half of the 70th seven, the great tribulation and part of the wrath of God.

The Fourth Seal: The Pale Horse And Rider, The great Tribulation(7 & 8).

“And when He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, come and see. And I looked and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him is DEATH and HELL followed with him. And power was given unto him over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”

Precisely in the middle of the 70th seven Satan and his fallen angels are cast down to the the earth by archangel Michael and the angels of God under his command(Rev. 12:9). He was filled with wrath; for he knoweth that he has but a short time (Rev. 12:12). He enters the Beast-antiChrist, and gives him his power, seat and great authority(Rev. 13:2). At this point the Beast-antiChrist relocates his headquarters to Jerusalem. He makes his debut, and erects a statue of himself in the rebuilt Jewish temple on Mount Moriah, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. He demands worship of all mortals. He institutes the Great Tribulation. It is the time of Jacob’s trouble(Jer. 30:7). He had anticipated the famine that followed the war, and had stockpiled food and medicine and supplies. There probably would be agricultural and economic boom prior to this time. The war would lead to global financial crisis. Before anyone could buy or sell, engage in any business transactions, receive medical treatment or medical supplies or get health or other insurance, he must have the mark of the Beast(Rev. 13:17). Those who do not would be hounded, ferreted out and killed. The instruments of death would be sword, hunger and death itself. Sword is any weapon used in warfare. The methods of death could be summarily executions, decapitation, starvation even crucifixion. Even those who were not ferreted out, if they have not enough food stored away before hand could die of starvation. Saying they will be killed by death is somewhat redundant and tautological. But what does it mean to die by means of the beasts of the Earth? The antiChrist is the Beast. Besides instructing his worshippers to make images of him in gold, silver, bronze, precious stones and wood to keep, there would be enlivened images of the beast installed at strategic places empowered to identify those who do not have the mark of the beast and to cause them to be killed. These enlivened images are called the beasts of the Earth. In these days of computer and artificial intelligence, these things are not difficult to figure out. There would be too many demons on Earth at that time. Some of them would possess men, others inanimate objects. We haven not yet seen immorality and wickedness, just wait until the middle of the 70th seven. There would be no more refinement in wickedness, no restraint whatever. It shall be crude and of the vilest form.

The Fifth Seal: Martyrs Under The Altar(9-11).

“And when He had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them who were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held: and they cried with a loud voice, saying, how long, O Lord, holy and true, dost Thou not judge our blood on that dwell upon the earth? And whites robes were given to everyone of them; and it was said unto them that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants, and also their brethren that should be killed as they were should be fulfilled.”

The fifth seal initiates a second series of seals that are unlike the first four seals. Gone are the horses and riders that initiate events. The fact that death reigns over the fourth part of the Earth makes the fifth seal a probable result. The relationship between seals five, six and seven is the wrath of God: seal five asks for it; seal six announces it; seal seven depicts it. The fifth seal is a heavenly scene, a reflection of the severe persecution of the saints going on here on Earth. These martyrs are described as souls under the altar. In other words, they are not resurrected saints. They have not yet received their glorified eternal immortal resurrection bodies. Therefore were they described as souls.

A definite altar is in view here. Two distinct altars are spoken of in the scroll of Revelation. The altar of incense(Rev. 7:5, 6:9 9:13), and the altar of burnt offering(Rev.11:1; 16:7). The altar of burnt offerings was located in the court of the priests. The altar of incense was located in the holy place before the curtain that separated the holy place from the Holy of Holies. It is likely it is the altar of incense that is in view, which may be the reason their souls cry out with a loud voice for vengeance. Why are these faithful souls kept underneath this particular altar? No explicit reason is given. These souls paid the ultimate sacrifice, physical death. This is the altar where God receives sweet aromas. They are symbolically kept in this place where their fragrant aromas ascend to God. Obviously God has great pleasure in these souls.

They called on God to avenge their deaths. They recognized that God is holy and true, and questioned how long it took Him to avenge their deaths. The phrase how long is not uncommon in The Scripture, particularly in the OT(Ps 6:3,4; 13:1,2; 35:17; 74:9,10; 79:5; 80:4). These martyrs cry out for vengeance. The question echoes the sentiment that too much time has passed between the deed and the punishment. This is very similar to the psalms which demand that God punish the evil doers(Ps 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 139). King David prayed such a prayer(2 Sam. 3:28,39), so did Nehemiah(Neh. 4:4,5). But God assured them He would do so as soon as the full complement of their brethren to be killed should be fulfilled. The number of those to be killed is not unlimited. Therefore death is not a sign of unfaithfulness, but a sign of faithfulness here. No doubt, some believers die because of their unfaithfulness, but these are killed for their faithfulness. Matt. 24:8, says then shall they deliver you to be afflicted, and shall kill you; and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. There is a certain number of saints to be martyred. God knows the number. It is not revealed to us. Once that number is complete, God will interrupt and put a stop to the the Great Tribulation. What is amputated is the Great Tribulation, not the 42 months allotted to the antiChrist.

The Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbance, God Amputates The Great Tribulation (Rev. 6:12-14).

“And I beheld when He had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; and the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when it is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain, and every island were moved out of their places.”

God cuts short the Great Tribulation by the antiChrist with cosmic and celestial disturbances. By this He serves notices to the wicked living earth-dwellers that He is about to pour out His wrath on the Earth. The synoptic gospels are synonymous in their affirmation of the sign given in the sun, moon and stars before the great and terrible Day Of The Lord. After the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon will not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken(Matt. 24:29). But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars of the heavens shall fall, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken(Mark 13:24,25). And there shall be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring(Luke 21:35). Evangelist Luke describes the Great Tribulation as Distress of Nations. Cosmic and celestial disturbances preceded the Day Of The Lord, and they occur at the breaking of the sixth seal. The Great Tribulation is cut short, and ends before the end of the 70th seven of Daniel’s.

The Reaction Of The Living, wicked Earth-Dwellers To The Cosmic Disturbance(14-17).

“And the kings of the Earth, the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens of the rocks and in the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us , and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand.”

The sixth seal announces the imminent arrival of the wrath of God in the form of earthly and celestial disturbances unparalleled in human history. The presence of God is beyond human appreciation unless man is holy. A wicked man in the presence of God is beyond human tolerance. They do not only want to die but to be out of sight, nonexistent.

The impact is obvious, men fainting from fear of those things that are coming upon the Earth. By the cosmic and celestial disturbances, the God of Heaven serves notice to the living wicked earth-dwellers that His wrath is about to be poured out on the them. The handwriting is on the wall, or is it on the sky for all to see? They know. They do not need to be reminded who is in charge. There will be no more lies and no more deceit. They do not need to be told anymore that God is, that evolution is scientific farce; that humanism, the apotheosis of man which reached its zenith in the deification and worship of the Beast-antiChrist is a delusion. They do not need to be preached to anymore. They suddenly become conscious of God and the imminency of His wrath upon them. There would be no more arguments which is the true God and Lord of the Heavens and the Earth. Therefore, they hide themselves in the dens and rocks of the mountains, and call to the rocks and the mountains to fall upon them and to hide them from the face of Him that sitteth on the Throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. In that day the paraphernalia of all false religions shall not save anyone. They shall ditch their regalia to hide themselves in the rocks and in the mountains; for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand. On that day, the sun shall be ashamed and the moon shall not give its light, when God arises to shake terribly the Earth. Men shall enter into the rocks and hide in the dust, for fear of the Lord and the glory of His Majesty. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and The Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. On that day shall men cast all the idols of gold, and silver which they have made for themselves to worship (the images of the Beast-antiChrist), to the moles, and to the bats; to go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of The Lord and the glory of His Majesty, when He arises to shake terribly the Earth. Cease from man whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of(Is. 2:10-22).

Jesus is the eschatological judge(John 5:27; Acts 20:42; Dan. 7:12,14), the stone cut out without hand that hit the statue of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in the foot and destroyed it totally. The wrath of God is the eschatological Day of the Lord. The cosmic and earthly disturbances darkened the heavens and froze the Earth. The appearance of the Son Of Man in the heavens dispels the darkness, and defrosts the Earth. But before God pours out His wrath upon the living wicked earth-dwellers, the saints shall be raptured, and the 144,000, 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel shall be sealed with the seal of God. The appearance of the Son of Man in the heavens, the Glory of God which the children of Israel called The Shekinah in the OT, before the breaking of the seventh seal is related to the Rapture of the Church before the Day of the Lord’s wrath begins. God does not exempt His people from the wrath of Satan administered by man, but He exempts them from His wrath which is administered by His Son. Noah was asked to get into the safety of the ark before the deluge(Gen.7:1). Lot was asked to flee Sodom before God rained fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah, Zeboim and Adamma, the cities of the plain(Gen. 19:12,13). God’s wrath begins with the breaking of the seventh seal, out of which emerge the seven trumpets(Rev.8:1). The cosmic and celestial disturbances introduced by the opening of the sixth seal, are preludial to the Rapture of the Church and the Day Of The Lord(Rev.7,8).

Revelation Chapter 5:1-14: The Seven-sealed Scroll and The Lamb of God

The Seven-sealed Scroll: verse 1-5.

Verse 1: I saw on the right hand Him that sat on the Throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. This is a heavenly scene. Here the revelator was taken to the Throne Room of God Almighty in the Heaven of heavens or the third Heaven. God the Father is seated on His Throne. That God the Father has a throne implies that He is a king. That he is a king implies He has a kingdom. There is the universal kingdom of God, and there is the earthly realm of that universal kingdom. That this Throne is in Heaven implies that it is the universal kingdom of God that is in view. That He is sitting on the throne, implies that He is a sitting King. That He is sitting implies that He is a reigning king. God is and He reigns. In His right hand, there is a book, written within and on the back side. The Greek word translated book here is “biblos” from which the English word bible and its cognates like biblical and biblicist are derived. It is best translated scroll or roll. In the ancient Near East as in the Roman World, documents were written on scrolls made from animal skins or papyrus and then rolled up. They could be written on the inside as well as on the outside. These documents could be marriage or business contracts, agreements between individuals or treaties between nations or the decrees and edicts of kings, nobles and senates. The scroll was sealed with seven seals. When rolled up, the scroll is secured with wires and knotted. These knots may be in a row or arranged haphazardly on the scroll. On these knots were placed wet clay or soft wax and the impression of the insignia of the owner is made and then left to congeal and harden. These knots of clay or wax on which the impression of the insignia of the owner are made are called seals or bullae(singular- bulla). For the purpose of consistency we shall stick to seals. Depending on the size of the scroll, the seals could be as few as one to three or as many as five to seven. The seals indicate ownership and authenticity. They are for identification and protection. Here there are seven seals. In Hebrew numerology and Gematria, seven is the divine number of perfection. It indicates completeness. The scroll with seven seals is the title deed of the Earth. God is the Lord of the Earth which He leased to Adam. It is the scroll of God’s judgement on the Earth which is both eschatological and consummative. It is the perfect judgement because it is divine in origin. God is just and shows no partiality(Deut.32:4; 1 Tim.5:21; Jam.3:17). He is no respecter of persons(Acts 10:31). There is no unrighteousness with Him(Rom.9:14). Let all be liars, but God remaineth true(Rom.3:2).

Verse 2: I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose the seals thereof? A search was made in heaven by the proclamation of the strong angel to find a man worthy to break the seals and the open the scroll. The identity of this strong angel is not revealed. He is probably one of the archangels, perhaps, Gabriel, the bearer of good news. He was sent to Daniel near the expiry of the captivity in Babylon to cause him to understand(Dan.9:20-22). He was sent to the Virgin Mary to inform her of the miraculous conception(Luk.1:26). He was sent to Zachariah the priest concerning the birth of John the Baptist, the herald of His First Advent(Luk.1:19).

The Greek word translated loose in the KJV is better translated break. In ancient Neareast, seals are broken before the contents of scrolls can be revealed, usually by the owner of the seal or anyone authorized by the owner or the one to whom the document is addressed. In chronological order, the seals are broken first and then the contents are revealed. In verse 3, no man was found worthy, neither on Earth nor in Heaven to open the scroll or to look thereon. If no man was found in Heaven, certainly none would be found on Earth. Angels were not given rulership over the Earth for they have no physical bodies with which to relate with the earth-dwellers; therefore angels have no authority to judge the Earth either. Anyone who broke the seals and opened the scrolls must be an Adam. He must be a man given authority over the Earth, a representative of God. A man who succeeded where Adam failed. A man who had overcome the Devil. A man who had recovered the lost glory of man. A man in whom the Prince of this world had nothing( John 14:30). A man in whom is no sin(1 Pet.2:22; 2 Cor.5:21). In verse 4, the revelator wept much because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. The situation looked dire and hopeless therefore the Lamentations of the Apostle. If there was no man found to break the seals and to open and read the scrolls, then Satan would rule the World for ever, and man would live in sin for ever though already redeemed by the finished work of Christ on the execution stake on Calvary. That would mean that the work of redemption though completed would not be consummated. But that was not to be. In verse 5, one of the 24 elders about the throne comforted him saying: weep not, behold the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the scroll and to break the seven seals thereof. Jesus prevailed because He is the God-Man. He had previously overcome the Devil in His first advent. He conquered sin and death. He rose from the dead triumphant. He ascended into heaven, angels principalities, powers and authorities are being made subject to Him.

The Lamb of God(v.6-10)

Here in verse 6, the description of the Throne Room in Heaven continued. Unlike in the previous five verses where the attention was on the occupier of The Throne and the seven-sealed scroll in His right hand, here the attention shifts to the lamb in the midst of The Throne. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He was seated at the right hand of the Father. But now he is in the midst of The Throne, the four beast and the twenty-four elders standing. He is standing because He is about to vacate His seat at the right hand of the Majesty in the heavens. He is about to relocate to the Earth to take over the rulership of the Earth as the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is about to return to the Earth as a conquering and triumphant Messiah, Messiah Ben David. He stands as a lamb as it had been slain. His identity is not hidden at all. It is not to be confused with those of any other. He is the lamb of God who took away the sin of the world(Jon.1:29). He was slain, but now He is risen. He is alive again. He conquered death. He conquered the devil and his hordes of fallen angelic beings. He conquered the world. He has right to the Title Deed of the Earth. He is about to metamorphose into the Lion of the tribe of Judah from the Lamb of God. He is the son of God. He is the son of Man. He is the kinsman-redeemer, the “goel.” He is the prototype of the heavenly archetypal man. He is of the family and lineage of David. He is The king. He is The priest, after the order of Melchesedec, eternal, endless. He has seven horns. Horns signal authority. The number seven signifies perfection and completeness. He has perfect and complete authority. He is the perfect ruler of the Earth. He has seven eyes which are the seven spirits of God(Is.11:1-9). These are the spirits of power, knowledge, wisdom, understanding, counsel, the fear of the Lord and righteousness. The seven spirits of God empowers Him for the reign of righteousness. He is a dictator but a benign dictator. These spirits are sent forth into all the Earth. During His reign these spirits shall pervade the Earth, therefore, righteousness and justice shall prevail. During His reign, the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and a toddler shall put his finger into the cockatice den; for the Earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea( Is.11:6-9; Hab. 2:15). In verse 7, He approached the Father seated on His throne with the seven- sealed scroll in his right hand. He demanded it. The Father handed it over to Him. This is the moment the whole creation had been waiting for. For the whole creation waiteth and travaileth together in pain until now…..(Rom.8:22). He now has the Title Deed of the Earth. He shall proceed to the Earth to reclaim God’s rule over the Earth and to evict the usurper and his minions from the earth’s premesis.

In verse 8, the four beasts and the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having everyone of them harps, and golden vials full of odours which are the prayers of the saints. Why fall down before the Lamb, in the presence of the Father, seated upon His Throne? Does anyone have doubt that the Son is God?. Here it is unequivocally shown that the Son is God. He is worshipped by men and angels in the presence of the Father. Was the Father jealous? No. Did He forbid it? No. That is exactly what He wants, that men should honour and worship the Son even as they honour and worship the Father(Jon.5:22,23). He that honours the Son, honours the Father. If any one worships the Son, he worships the Father also. If any man acknowledges the Father, he acknowledges the Son. He that had the Son had the Father. He that had not the Son, had not the Father. These heavenly beings have harps, instrument of music to worship and praise both the Father and the Son. They have vials, full of odours which are the prayers of the saints. The Greek word translated vial is “phiale.” It is not like the modern day vial used in medicine, narrow throated. It is more like a saucer, of which the content can be easily emptied. The prayers of the saints were quickly offered unto God as sweet insence and odours. The writer has had the privilege of experiencing this personally. Not only the prayers of saints ascend to God as incense but their lives generally. They may be aromatous or odoriferous, contingent upon the lifestyle, value system, conversation, or conduct of the saints.

Doxology to The Lamb: The Universal Choir in Session(v.9-14).

Verse 9: And they sung a song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the scroll, and to break the seals thereof: for thou wast slain and redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, tongue, people, and nation. He had the right credentials. Any one who would have taken the seven-sealed scroll from the Father, broken the seals, and opened the scroll to reveal the content, would have previously lived a sinless life on Earth, would have been slain and redeemed fallen humanity from the ravages of sin, the shackles of the law and the powers of darkness. He would have conquered death. He would have risen from the the dead and ascended into Heaven, and held session at the right hand of God the Father, the Majesty in The Heaven. No other being in Heaven fits this bill but J e s u s, the Son of God. Therefore, He is worthy. He is worthy because He came. He was slain. He died. His blood was shed to redeem all mankind. He did not sin, but He died for sinners. He redeemed us unto God the Father. He reconciled us unto Him. He is the mediator of the New Covenant which was established on better promises(Heb.8:6). He deserves our praise and worship. Some older manuscripts read: and hast redeemed them…., implying that the four beasts and the twenty and four elders are not part of redeemed humanity. It may well be true, but it does not make any significant alteration in our theology, whether it were us or them. Fallen humanity is redeemed and the Son of God is glorified. In verse 10, He not only redeemed us but made us kings and priests: we shall reign with Him on Earth. In verse 11, the voice of the four beasts and four twenty elders were joined by the chorus of an innumerable company of angels. The Universal Choir increased in geometric progression: first, the four beasts and the four and twenty elders, then the ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of angels, and finally the whole creation. Verse 12 is the combined and unanimous voice of the four beasts and the four and twenty elders, saying: worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and blessing. In verse 13, the voices of the four beasts, the four and twenty elders, and innumerable number of angels were joined by all creation. What a universal choir, a universal orchestra? And every creature which is in the heavens, and on the Earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying: blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. Does any one have doubts that Jesus deserves worship? Here He is worshipped and praised in tandem with Him that sitteth on the Throne, that is, the Father. Here every creature in the whole universe worshipped Him and the Father. Friends and foes, animate and inanimate, the living and the dead, the just and the unjust, great and small, high and low, rich and poor. In verse 14, the four beasts said Amen. And four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever. The doxology did not end, it is an eternal orchestra: for the four beasts and the four and twenty elders continue to worship Him that liveth for and ever. Amen.

Revelation Chapter 4: God’s Throne Room in Heaven

After this is a phrase John the revelator uses to introduce a new unit in the sequence of his vision. It is a textual marker. It is also used in Rev.7:9; 15:5 and 18:1. It does not indicate a temporal shift. It does not mean a significant amount of time has transpired between the units of material. It rather indicates that the revelator had received the vision in units of materials. Rev.1:1-3:22 is the first unit. Rev.4:1-7:8 is the second unit. Rev.6:8-15:4 is the third unit. Rev.15:5-17:8 is the fourth unit. And Rev.18:1-22 is the last unit.

I looked and behold. This is a phrase John also uses frequently in Revelation. It is not indicative of physical sight but a spiritual sight. He saw into the realm of the spirit. Although John’s physical body was still on the island of Patmos, he saw a door opened in Heaven. This was beyond physical sight. He not only saw, but also he heard a voice like a trumpet, saying come up hither. This is the operation of the gift of the Spirit called discerning of spirits(1 Cor.12:10). It runs parallel to the physical senses. The one in whom this gift operates can see, hear, smell, taste and perceive in the spirit just as we do in the natural.

Man is a tripartite being: he is spirit, he has a soul and lives in body. There is a physical body in which we live here on Earth, which acts as a transducer enabling us to relate with the external physical environment. But there is a spirit body which houses our souls. Even in the realm of the spirit, the soul is invisible. The soul is fluid. It is the constellation of the will, intellect and emotion. It is internal to the spirit. But it is possible for one to know what the other person is thinking through perception not by sight. The spirit body is invisible to the physical senses though it looks more or less like the physical body. But there is a third body, the eternal immortal resurrection body that enable one to relate to both the two realms of the spirit and the material worlds at the same time. The spirit body or simply the spirit man to which the soul is internal, shall be clothed with the eternal immortal resurrection body at the resurrection. Jesus and the OT saints already possess this kind of body(Matt.27:52,53).

Here John saw and heard. To hear and see into the ream of the spirit, one has to be in the spirit. So John was in the spirit as he was on the Lord’s day in Rev.1:10. He heard a voice like a trumpet. The voice is no other than that of our Lord Jesus the Christ. In Rev.1, He has revealed Himself as judge of the Church, but here He reveals Himself as judge of the World. The voice invited him into Heaven, into the throne room of the temple in Heaven: come up hither, and I will show you things which shall be hereafter. The Scroll of Revelation is divided into three parts. The things which thou hast seen(Rev.1), the things that are(Rev.2,3), and the things which shall be hereafter( Rev.4-22). If anyone was in the same physical location that John was, the one could not have heard or seen what John saw and heard unless the one were in the spirit as John was.

On three separate occasions, John is invited to see a revelatory vision(Rev.4:1; 17:1;21:9). There are some who urge us to believe that the Rapture took place at this point, but there is no textual or exegetical basis for this claim. Robert L. Thomas claims the prophesies of Rev.4-19 will describe what will happen after the period of the church age has run its course. To attempt a divorcement between the church age and the events of Rev.4-19, as the pretribulationists do is biblically unjustified. This claim is clearly based on bias. There is no textual basis to claim that the church age ended at Rev.3:22. There is no explicit passage of Scripture that makes such claim. The argument that Rev.4-19 does not involve the church is based on silence. This is called argument from silence. The reference to wife in Rev.19:7 designates the church. The Church was designated in other ways in Rev.4-19. These are every tribe and tongue and people and nation(5:8); a kingdom of priests(5:10); fifth seal martyrs( 6:9); a multitude(7:9;19:5,6); bond servants(11:18;19:2,5); our brethren(12:10); the remnant of her children(12:17); saints(13:7,10;14:12;-8:20,24), and wife(19:7).

Verse 2 says, immediately I was in the spirit. As I pointed out, John was in the spirit and he saw and heard. There are two ways in which believers can see into the realm of the spirit. They are through dreams and visions. There are three types of visions: trance, in which one temporarily loses consciousness and sees into the realm of the spirit, inward or spiritual vision in which one retains some level of consciousness and at the same time sees into the realm of the spirit, and open vision in which one possesses full consciousness, totally aware of one’s environment and sees into the realm of the spirit. In an inward or spiritual vision, one is unaware of one’s environment and sees into the realm of the spirit. The difference between dream and vision is in the level of consciousness. In dream, one is in stage 4 and 5 of sleep, called rapid eye movement sleep(REM). If one is standing and falls into a trance, depending on how long the trance lasts, one can fall down. There is some muscular atony associated with it. On the other hand if one is standing and sees an inward vision, one keeps standing, but is not aware of ones physical environment, but sees into the realm of the spirit. There is no loss of muscular tone. If one were walking and had an inward or spiritual vision, one could stand still or still be walking while one sees into the realm of the spirit; but one is not aware of ones physical environment. In open vision, one retains full consciousness and yet sees into the realm of the spirit. In open vision, one is fully aware of one’s environment.

The Throne Of God(v.2b).

Verse 2b says, behold a throne was set in Heaven. John’s physical body was on Earth, but his spirit saw a throne set in Heaven. And one sat on the throne. What John saw here is the throne room in Heaven. The one who sat on the throne is no doubt God the Father. Throughout the whole scroll of Revelation, He was sitting. He never sat up. He was sitting because He had committed all judgement to His Son. Because Jesus is the judge of the Earth, He sat up. He that sat on the throne was like jasper and sardine stone. Jasper is a compact, opaque, cryptocrystalline variety of quartz, usually coloured red: often used in decorative carvings. Sardine stone or carnelian, is a brownish red mineral which is often used as semi-precious gemstone. These precious stones or gems are various shades of brown and reddish hue. These are symbols of royalty and wealth. God the Father is the sovereign Lord of the Universe. He is the king upon the throne of His universal kingdom, the possessor of the heavens and the Earth.

Verse 3b says, and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. There was a rainbow Round the throne, greenish in colour. Green signifies life and fruitfulness. It is from this throne that life emanates to the whole Universe. No wonder the throne is enveloped in emerald. As the Father has life in Himself, even so has He given to the Son that He may have life in Himself; and hath given Him authority to execute judgement also, because He is the Son of Man(John 5:26,27). “I and the Father are one”(John 10:30). “He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father also”(John 14:9b). There is no contradiction here at all. As the Father is Life, so also the Son is life.

Worshippers About The Throne(v.4-11).

Verse 4 says there are twenty and four seats round about the throne: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they have on their heads crowns of gold. The thrones of these elders form a circle around the throne of God the Father. They are clothed in white garments symbolic of righteousness. But who are these twenty and four elders? Are they human or angelic? Biblical scholars are not agreed on this, it is possible to come to a conclusion of their identity through proper reading of the text in the original Greek. There are 12 patriarchs of Israel, and there are 12 Apostles of the Lamb. John the revelator is one of the 12. But he is not one of the twenty four, neither did he recognize any of them as one of his colleagues. The patriarchs would also be known to his audience, but they too did not recognize any of them either. There would be no confusion about the identity of these elders were it not for the poor translation in the KJV. This problem has been solved by the harmonization of the subjective and objective pronouns which must agree in number, singular with singular and plural with plural in Rev.5:9,10 in the New American Standard Version. They shall reign in verse 10 is third person plural which is contradictory to we shall reign in verse 9 which is first person plural. One of the cardinal rules of biblical interpretation is that there must be no antinomies or contradictions. Since we believe that John did not make a mistake in recording this prophecy, and that the Scriptures do not contain antinomies, we support a harmony of the text. Therefore they are angelic beings.

Verse 5: Out of the throne proceeded lightings and thunderings and voices. Thunderings and lightings and voices emanate from the throne of the invisible God, frightening onlookers. These signal the glory and the power of Almighty God. And there are seven lamps of fire burning which are the seven Spirits of God. Fire is symbolic of the spirit. On the day of Pentecost, when the disciples were baptized with the Holy Spirit, there appeared unto them cloven tongues as of fire(Acts 2:3). Baptism in the Holy Spirit occurs in tandem with baptism with fire in the Holy Scriptures(Matt.3:11;Luke 3:16). Seven is the number of perfection. There is no doubt this is the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. We can see that the three persons are there present in the throne room. The Father seated on the throne, the Son standing as a slain Lamb in the midst of the throne( Rev.5:6), and the seven lamps of fire burning which is indicative of the Holy Spirit.

Verse 6, And before the throne was a sea of glass like unto crystal. The crystal sea is another display of the splendor of the throne of the sovereign Lord of the Universe. And in the midst and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. In the midst and round about were four beasts is difficult to visualize. But we must remember that this description is in the realm of the spirit where there is a fourth dimension and no distance. These angelic beings are full eyes before and behind. They see in all directions at once. They have isotropic vision, that is, equal in all directions. They are cherubim. They guard the glory of God. They also reveal something of the omnipresence of God. God sees everything at once, the past, the present and the future. There is no succession of events in His omniscient consciousness. Verse 7 tells us about the look of these marvelous beings. The first is like a lion, the second like a calf, the third has the face of man and the fourth like flying eagle. The lion is the king and representative of the wild beasts, the calf is representative of the domestic beasts. The third represents humanity, and the fourth, the eagle is king and representative of the fowls of the heavens. All living creatures are represented in the throne room and presence of God. The creatures on Earth are also represented in Heaven, but there is no schism amongst them. There is peace and harmony in the heavenly environment. All creation must worship Him who is the creator and the Possessor of the heavens and the Earth.

Verse 8 continues the description of the four beasts. They all have six wings apiece. Seven is the divine number but six is the number of created beings. The four living creature represent all living creatures. They are full of eyes. They see everything, they take note of everything, and they recorded everything. And more importantly, they rest not day and nightly, saying , holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is, and is to come. The phrase who was and is and is to come referent Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity. Does that surprise anyone that in the midst of the throne of the Father, the four living creatures worship the Son. Jesus is God: there no doubt about that. Verses 9 & 10. When these beasts give glory, honour and thanks to Him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before Him that sat on the throne, and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, verse 11, “thou art worthy , O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” As we have pointed out earlier, the four living creatures are representative of all living creatures which God in His manifold wisdom hath created for His own pleasure. Man was made glory to God. “It is He that made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture”(Ps 100:3). So also the fowls of the heavens, the beast of the field and all creeping, and whatever moveth upon the face of the Earth.
